All directions made by the team physician must be followed. All referrals to the team physicians are made by the staff ATCs ONLYStudent workers and coachesStaff ATCs are responsible for reporting injuries and student-athlete’s health status to coaches. You are not to provide special favors for student-athletes. You are not to discuss an athlete’s injury or health status with anyone outside of the AT staff.Emergency SituationsEmergency action plans (EAP) are developed for each venue. They are designed and implemented to provide pre-thought guidance in handling any potential emergency situation. You are to review and practice all EAPs with the KSU Athletic Training staff before working at the different venues. In case of an emergency, campus police is the primary contact for initiating EMS service. KSU Athletic Training staff or coaches will make the EMS calls. An unstable student-athlete must be transported by ambulance and not in a personal vehicle. The emergency equipment that is available at KSU are two (2) AEDs, vacuum splints, CPR masks, and wound care materials. You should be familiar with the location of all emergency equipment and be competent in using the equipment before working your first practice or game.Bloodborne PathogensThere is a potential coming in contact with blood and other bodily fluids when working with the various sports teams. When dealing with these fluids, it is important to protect yourself by wearing personal protective equipment (latex gloves, pocket masks, protective eyewear, etc). When dealing with wound care (cleaning of open wounds, bandaging, etc), gloves need to be worn. All wound care materials (bandages, gloves, gauze pads, sharps) will need to be disposed of in the proper containers labeled “Biohazard.” Any garments or towels that are contaminated will need to be removed immediately or as soon as possible and disposed of in the proper containers. The Athletic Training room will need to be cleaned and decontaminated daily. If blood or other bodily fluids have been exposed in the Athletic Training room, decontamination will take place. A solution of 10% bleach to water is used for decontamination. These supplies are located in the Athletic Training room and also in the kits.If you are exposed to any blood or bodily fluids with no protective equipment on or if your gloves have been torn, punctured, or the ability to function as a barrier has been compromised, notify the staff ATCs immediately so all OSHA guidelines are followed for a post-exposure plan. Student workers need to be “cleared” by staff ATCs before being allowed to tape the student-athletes. You must be able to tape efficiently and provide enough support. You are allowed to use the tape from the Athletic Training room to practice, but you are asked not be wasteful since there is a limited supply of tape. The following tapings are what you will need to be proficient in are; ankles, arches, fingers, and wrists. Treatments and RehabilitationStudent-athletes’ rehabilitation and treatment are set by the staff ATcs. All acute (new) injuries will need to be consulted with an ATC prior any treatment or rehab. All treatments will be recorded on the student-athlete’s rehab sheet(s). Rehab is required for all injured athletes.Staff ATCs and the team physicians will design the athlete’s rehab program. Rehabs for specific injuries are designed to be followed unless otherwise noted by staff ATCs. Rehab sessions are recorded on individual rehab sheets and also in Sportsware. You will be educated on the use of modalities; once you are familiar and compotent in the use, you may treat student-athlete under the direct supervision of the staff ATCs. If a student-athlete experiences pain or discomfort with treatment or rehab you are to notify a staff ATC so adjustments can be made. Student-athletes are NOT permitted to administer their own treatments.Student-athletes will need to be re-evaluated during the course of his/her rehab. If no improvement is made the staff ATC will decide when the student-athlete will see the team physician. TravelStudent workers may have the opportunity to travel with various athletic teams. A student worker may or may not travel with a staff ATC. If you decide to travel, your role is a First Responder.
