How to Upload and Publish Your Book on KDP and CreateSpace

Here are two video tutorials we recommend and have permission from Chad to share:

1) For uploading to KDP: 2) For uploading to CreateSpace:

If you prefer to read instructions rather than watch the tutorials, see step by step instructions below.

How to upload your files to CreateSpace:

? We recommend uploading to CS at least 10 days before launch - You will create your account / log in here and follow the instructions below. You can order a proof copy, copies for yourself, events, family etc.

Here's what you'll select when setting up your CS listing:

1. Interior Type: black and white or color, it's up to you, but color is more costly

2. paper color: cream or white, whichever you selected for your formatting

3. standard size is 6x9 (but select the size you had your book formatted for, they must match)

4. upload PDF interior file

5. cover finish (we always use and recommend selecting matte)

6. channels: you might as well select everyone that you can. You will need to enter bisac categories before you can select bookstores and online retailers. Check out our video here on understanding royalties and expanded distribution:

7. pricing is up to the author and you will want to use a price that you think will work well and be appealing to potential customers but will also give yourself some revenue. We typically see $7.99 - $9.99. You can scope out some other books in your genre to get an idea. Do select "suggest GBP and EUR price based on US price".

8. include a description and format it in html. This will allow the use of proper headers, paragraph spacing, bold, italic, etc. Examples of tags you may want to use are (paragraph),

(header tags), (bold), (italics) You can use this free online tool:

9. bisac categories are important for helping people find your book online. You will want to scope through them and pick something that somewhat relates to the main subject of your book. This may be helpful:

10. I would include an author bio in the same way you include your description with proper html tags

11. You can add up to 5 keywords and these should reflect what you feel to be important in helping people to find your book. For example: health and fitness, safe and effective weight loss, calorie counting, easy diet plans, healthy weight loss etc. Here's some SEO tips:

How to upload your files to KDP:

Here's some info on KDP Select, Kindle Matchbook and the Kindle Lending Program. You'll be asked if you want to sign up for these when you build your listing on KDP.

? 3-5 days before your official launch ? Create your KDP account if not already established, then build your listing and publish on Amazon. This allows time for processing and correcting any errors etc. prior to your official launch day.

? As soon as the book is live, email KDP and request that they link your paperback and Kindle book together, you'll need to include the ISBN # of your paperback and the ASIN # to the Kindle edition and both of those #'s will show up on your product page and in your account catalog listings.

Next - Set up your author profile and claim your book title:

1. Log in here: to set up your profile

2. Once logged in and profile is complete, at the top is a link that says "View and Edit Your list of Books"- click that.

3. Click the button that says "Add More Books"

4. This brings you to a search bar where you can enter either your name or the book title

5. It should show up in the search bar, and below it, you can click `This Is My Book"

6. There may be one more confirmation page, but it should be straightforward

Use the rest of the time before your launch to look over your product page, proof the listing and make sure everything is showing up correctly, and have early bird / beta readers post reviews before launch.

If you are doing a Buck Book promo:

? Buck Book promotion will run for 24 hours at 99 cents so make sure to drop your price at by 10pm PDT. Then promote your book and get as many downloads as you can, solicit reviews, share on blogs, podcasts etc. for the collective momentum effect.

? The day after promo, raise your price to whatever you like, we recommend starting with $2.99, that price point seems to perform best, but if it keeps selling well, you can raise / lower it as needed until you find your own sweet spot. If you're selling 10 a month at $7.99, that's better than selling 20 at $2.99, and it also depends on your goals: Make more money or reach more people. We're agnostic on this.
