Mopeds and Motorized Scooters

Mopeds or motorized scooters are defined by law as a motorized vehicle and all operators must be in possession of a valid driver's license. If the Moped/Motorized Scooter has an engine displacement of more than 50 cubic centimeters, or produces more than 2 gross brake horsepower, then the operator must have an M endorsement on their license. This also applies to Mopeds/Motorized Scooters that are capable of a maximum speed greater than 30 miles per hour on a flat surface. If these vehicles exceed any of the above requirements, it is considered a motorcycle and all motorcycle laws apply.

In an effort to combat moped theft, the Nevada Legislature passed a bill in 2015 requiring all mopeds operated on the roadway be registered through the Nevada DMV. As of November 1, 2016, the DMV has been issuing moped registrations. All Mopeds/Motorized Scooters must be brought to the nearest DMV office for inspection prior to being registered. There will be a one-time registration fee of $33, plus other fees for an approximate total of $60. The registration will be valid until the owner transfers ownership or cancels the registration. As of January 1, 2017, all local and state Law Enforcement agencies will begin enforcement.
