Conflict 180

The Restorative Leadership Matrix 2018(c) 2018 Conflict 180; Based on Wachtel and McCold’s Social Discipline Window INCLUDEPICTURE "" \* MERGEFORMATINET Note: Leadership = your sphere of influence – not an official position of powerMYTH: Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice are “soft” and let people “get away” with hurting others without any accountability for their actions.TRUTH: That would put us into the “Rescuing” or “Resigned” quadrant of the Leadership Matrix, with low expectations in both cases. Resigned would be doing NOTHING about the harm. Rescuing would be giving people an easy exit by telling them how to do it better and feeding them the answers and strategies for making it right. In contrast, Restorative leaders co-create shared community values for living and working together (high expectations) with all stakeholders (high partnership) and co-design community practices (e.g., Circles) that support individuals and communities in taking responsibility and restoring community when norms and values are violated (high expectations and high partnership).MYTH: Harsh punishments and tough consequences doled out by authority figures create a safer environment, make people “accountable” for their actions, and prevent further harm.TRUTH: Harsh punishment and tough consequences doled out by others (the Righteous quadrant) encourage people who create harm to feel like “victims” and to deny or minimize the impact of their harmful actions. Punishment (e.g., traffic tickets, incarceration, suspensions, corporal punishment) has NOT been shown to be a long-term deterrent for community violations by adults or children. In contrast, Restorative leaders involve those who were impacted and those who did the harm in a process of figuring out together what went wrong and how to make things right. This increases learning, empathy for those who were harmed, responsibility-taking, and community accountability (figuring out how the environment has helped create the conditions for the harmful actions) – while decreasing repeated harmful acts over time. ................
