Subject: Language Arts & Science
Grade Level: Gifted Kindergarten (bilingual)
Lesson Days/Minutes: (3 days, 30 minutes each)
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
NGSS.K-LS1-1.- Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
Content Objectives:
• Students will be able to identify and verbally share out prior knowledge of the butterfly life cycle.
• Students will be able to listen for a purpose (sequence).
• Students will be able to answer questions relating to the butterfly life cycle, as described in “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
• Students will be able use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to display each part of the life cycle of a butterfly, creating a collage.
Language Objectives:
• Students will be able to listen for information from the text, relating to sequence.
• Students will participate in group and class discussions on the life cycle of a butterfly from prior knowledge and newly gained knowledge.
• Students will be able to draw and write sentences, describing the butterfly life cycle.
Materials:
• KWL Chart on white board
• “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle
• Manipulatives from the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar
• Sentence strips
• Puzzles of butterfly life cycle
• Scissors
• Glue
• Crayons
• Paper
• Pencils
• Miscellaneous Art Materials
Preparation and Motivation
• Teacher will draw a KWL chart on the board. Teacher will ask students to share out what they already know about butterflies (types, life cycle, etc.). Teacher will write/draw students prior knowledge about butterflies under the “Already Know” section of the KWL chart.
• Teacher will guide students in their thinking about what they “Want to Learn”, relating to the life cycle of a butterfly.
Presentation
• Through teacher “think-aloud” and student input, teacher will create a collage with pictures, vocabulary words, and sentences.
• Then, the teacher will ask students to pay attention to the changes which the butterfly goes through, as the teacher reads the story aloud, and give thumbs up when they hear that the butterfly has physically changed.
• The teacher will read the story aloud.
• The teacher will ask questions relating to the butterfly life cycle, as described in “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
• The students will participate in class discussions on the life cycle of a butterfly from prior knowledge and newly gained knowledge.
• Students will fill-in the “Learned” section of the KWL chart.
Practice
• Group Practice: Working within their groups is encouraged, so that the students can think out loud and discuss the life cycle of a butterfly.
• Independent Practice: Student will be provided a blank paper, pencil, crayons and other materials. Students will be asked to create a collage, describing each stage of the butterfly life cycle.
• When the students are finished, they will share their collage to a peer for reciprocal teaching.
