Akron Knights & opponent honor fallen teammate

By Glenn Miller Roy Hobbs Baseball

Anybody wandering into JetBlue Park at 2 p.m. Sunday knew something special was happening.

Todd Conduff and Tommy Evans of the Akron Knights walked solemnly to the pitcher's mound, holding #32 team jersey between them. The rest of the Knights gathered around the mound and removed their caps and then knelt. The opposing Pigs Heaven team respectfully lined up along the first base line and also knelt.

The Knights honored teammate Rob Daigle, who died Aug. 11 of ALS at the age of 51.

Public address announcer Brian Mullen read a statement prepared by the Knights.

"Ladies and gentlemen, today the Akron Knights would like to invite you to join them in honoring their teammate and dear friend Rob Daigle," Mullen said. "Three months ago, Rob, a pitcher for the Knights and long-time Boston Red Sox fan, lost his 16-month battle with ALS. Rob fought ALS with hope, grace, dignity and honor. He wore the Knights No. 32 with pride, passion and class."

His number has been retired and all Knights players are wearing a patch on their jerseys to honor Daigle. Knights pitcher John Hardesty suggested the patch.

"He was a great teammate," Conduff said of Daigle. Daigle played 8 years for the Knights, even after moving

from Ohio back to his hometown of

Newburyport, N.H. In addition, he played

for the New England Indians and the Kent

Mudhens.

Evans said his friend stood 6-foot-5.

"He had dominance on the mound

and about himself," Evans said. "But he

was a gentle giant. Just a good-hearted

guy. ... A perfect gentleman."

Daigle, who was an assistant baseball

Rob Daigle at 2015 RHWS

coach at his alma mater, Newburyport High School, loved the game

"He was a scholar of the game," Evans

said. "He was a mentor for hundreds of kids."

Daigle married his wife, Jenny, on Nov. 8, 2014. "He married

an angel on Earth," Evans said.

On June 5, 2015 the Newburyport News carried a story

about Daigle.

"I have extreme passion for my baseball, and I know that

I can't give everything I can, especially to the team," Daigle

told the paper. "I can't get out there and hit them fly balls or

hit ground balls. The energy level is very low and it's a death

sentence, I know that."

But he fought the death sentence as long as he could. On

Sunday, Rob Daigle was remembered and honored.

RH Committee Will Determine AAAA Playoffs

The Roy Hobbs Advisory Committee will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roy Hobbs World Series headquarters to determine the set up and seeding for the Veterans AAAA playoffs, which will be announced no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Although all AAAA managers have been invited to participate on the committee, any interested managers are welcome to come and be involved too. Anyone interested in attending should contact Tom Giffen at World Series Headquarters.

Veterans play began Sunday with 12 teams in the AAAA hunt. The Committee will determine the 8 teams that remain in the AAAA double-elimination playoffs and then seed those teams. The Veterans AAAA double-elimination playoffs start Thursday.

The remaining 4 teams will be added to the general pool and play a fifth pool game Thursday. Those teams then will be seeded in the AAA or AA single-elimination brackets for Friday.

The seeding and scheduling for all AAAA playoff games will be posted at World Series Headquarters at the Player Development Complex and be available on world-series as well as being put on the Roy Hobbs message line: 239.533.7694.

Playoff pitching guidelines

For the record, here is a recap on the rules on pitching eligibility for the playoffs.

Roy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8th and 9th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings ? 6 outs or 10 hitters ? during pool play.

AAAA qualifier teams may not add pitchers to their lineup on Thursday; however, Open Division teams may have pitchers arrive Thursday ? those pitchers much throw 5 innings or 25 hitters to qualify for the playoffs.

Finally, in the playoffs, those "non-qualified" middle-inning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive

positions where they started the game. That is as important as the "spirit of the rule" that these non-qualified pitchers who are used as "inning-eaters" are players who ordinarily are playing other positions.

And, please remember that any players leaving the RHWS today (Monday) to return on Thursday MUST turn in their player ID Card and re-register upon their return. They must return before the quarterfinals of the playoffs, regardless of

RHWS Bat Regulations

The Roy Hobbs Baseball bat policy for the Roy Hobbs World Series is as follows: a. All Bats must be solid wood, single-unit construction and

cannot be hollow. b. Bats with wood barrels and handles of a different com-

position or design are prohibited. (Laminated wood bats are approved as long as they meet the 100% wood and non-hollow specs above.) Single-unit turned bats with handle treatments are approved. c. There are no requirements that bat companies certify their bats, unless the bat is challenged and Roy Hobbs officials cannot make a determination of the bat's construction with data at hand. On Challenged bats during a game, event playing rules take precedence.

Roy Hobbs Rules / 5.04a Sanctions for violations on nonapproved bats.

5.04a.1 First offense: Reported during the at-bat, warning issued, bat confiscated, get another bat and play on; If discovered after at-bat and before first pitch to next hitter, batter is out, dead ball & bat confiscated.

5.04a.2 Subsequent violations with same batter: Batter called out, ejected, bat confiscated.

5.04a.3 All confiscated bats delivered to RHWS; bats returned to owners once last game of division is completed.

The Veterans Division Pairings Party will be held Thursday night at Chicago Boys Bar and Grill at 7 p.m.

Tickets will be required for admission to the party. Those tickets are free and available from Karen Marcinkoski at the RHWS Headquarters inside the front entrance to the PDC building.

Tickets are limited to 3 per team through Tuesday. Whatever tickets are not picked by closing time Tuesday will be available to all comers on Thursday.

Cups and Patches

Roy Hobbs Baseball offers its sincere apologies for the late arrival of both the 2016 RHWS souvenir cups and uniform patches. And we thank you for your patience.

Greg Wagner Photo Akron Knights runner scores against Pigs Heaven.

We anticipate both arriving no later than mid-day Tuesday, but we remain at the mercy of the shipping company. The manufacturers, who were delayed for unknown reasons, say the items have been shipped to us here in Fort Myers.

The Cups and Patches will be available at the T-Shirt outlet in the screened-in patio at the Player Development Complex. You will need your Player ID card to get the missing items.

Picking up T-Shirts ...

The tournament T-shirt is available through Friday only for all registered players outside the Roy Hobbs Store in the screened in patio at the Player Development Complex. No Shirts will be given out on Saturdays.

Hours to pick up the Tournament T-shirt are from Noon to 6 p.m. With the shirt, each player will get a tournament patch.

Players will need their RHWS ID card to get their shirts, no exceptions ? No drivers licenses needed.

No Beer sales at PDC this year

New guidelines have eliminated Roy Hobbs' opportunity to provide beer for sale at its Player Development Complex clubhouse headquarters this year.

Meaning, there will be no beer sales at any of the complexes. Roy Hobbs respectfully requests that players and fan remember that beer in the parking lots is a violation of Florida alcohol consumption statutes, and Roy Hobbs is committed by contract to policing that behavior. Such violations can lead to suspension from the tournament and expulsion for repeat offenders, and that's before we get to the municipal fines. Please help Roy Hobbs out with these guidelines.
