Ray Douglas Bradbury nasceu em Waukegan, Illinois, Estados Unidos, em 22 de agosto

de 1920. O trabalho de seu pai, t¨¦cnico em instala??o de linhas telef?nicas, fez a fam¨ªlia

se deslocar por muitas cidades do pa¨ªs, at¨¦ se fixar em Los Angeles, Calif¨®rnia, em

1934.

Bradbury encerrou os estudos formais em 1938, na Los Angeles High School, mas

conti-nuou a estudar como autodidata, enquanto trabalhava como jornaleiro. Estreou na

literatura com o conto ¡°Hollerbochen¡¯s dilemma¡±, que surgiu num fanzine de fic??o

cient¨ªfica entre 1938 e 1939. Sua primeira publica??o paga, o conto ¡°Pendulum¡±, escrito

em parceria com Henry Hasse, apareceu em 1941 na revista Super Science Stories. No

ano seguinte, escreveu The lake, obra com a qual fixou seu estilo de escrever, mesclando

fic??o cient¨ªfica, terror e suspen-se. Em 1946, tinha seu primeiro conto inclu¨ªdo no Best

American Short Stories, o que se repetiria em 1948 e 1952. Em 1947, casou-se com

Marguerite McClure e publicou o livro de contos de terror Dark carnival. Tr¨ºs anos

depois, lan?ou Cr?nicas marcianas, colet?nea de vinte e seis contos com a qual

consolidou sua carreira de escritor de fic??o cient¨ªfica. No ano seguinte, quando tamb¨¦m

recebeu o Benjamin Franklin Award por seus contos, escreveu Uma sombra passou por

aqui, adaptado para o cinema por Jack Smight em 1969. O romance Fahrenheit 451, que

o consagrou mundialmente, foi lan?ado em 1953 e filmado em 1966 por Fran?ois

Truffaut.

Atuando como roteirista desde 1953, recebeu o Oscar em 1956 pelo roteiro de Moby

Dick, filme estrelado por Gregory Peck e dirigido por John Huston. Foi agraciado ainda

com o Aviation-Space Writer¡¯s Association Award pelo melhor artigo sobre o espa?o

numa revista norte-americana, em 1967, o World Fantasy Award for Lifetime

Achievement, em 1977, e o Grand Master Nebula Award (para escritores norteamericanos de fic??o cient¨ªfica), em 1988. Em novembro de 2000, a National Book

Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters concedeu-lhe o

National Book Awards.

Ray Bradbury morreu no dia 6 de junho de 2012, aos 91 anos, em Los Angeles,

Calif¨®rnia.
