Facebook allows you to create a personal profile that include personal interests, affilitations/networks, pictures and anything else you would like to share with your “friends” – people you have agreed to be added as friends to your profile. Once you establish an account or profile, you can update it as often as you like, add or change pictures or update your status information like a diary-like entry for your friends to see. Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimted number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

Signing Up for an Account

A link to your email account will appear on the next screen.

Facebook will then send you a confirmation e-mail to the email address you provide. You will have to log into your e-mail account with your username and password (for your email account) in order to open up the message. By doing this, Facebook checks to see if your e-mail account is active.

Once in your email, you will have to open up the e-mail message from Facebook. You will then have to click on a link in order to complete the sign up process.

What’s Next? Follow these steps to complete the registration process!

1. Finding Friends

❑ Searching your email account is the fastest and most effective way to find your friends on Facebook. Simply, type in your e-mail and corresponding password, and click on Find Friends in order to see which of your friends are on Facebook. Your e-mail password will not be stored or saved.

2. Profile Information

❑ In your profile (this what your “friends” will see), you can enter information such as school, the year you graduated or job-related information. You yourself decide what you want seen on your profile page. You can click on Skip this step ( at any time.

3. Joining a Network

❑ Facebook users can join 1 or more networks, organized by city, workplace, school and/or region (e.g. Toronto, ON) in order to see profiles of other people in the same network. These people can also see yours (depending on your privacy settings). You do not have to join a network. You can click on Skip this step ( at any time.

4. Welcome to the Home Page

❑ Once you are done the initial set-up of your account, you will be taken to your Home Page. Here, you will see notifications and updates of what your friends are doing. You can find people you know by name or email by typing in the Search box (upper right-hand corner). For example, you can search up the Le@rning Centre of your home library (e.g. Malvern Le@rning Centre).

❑ You can also update your profile at any time (see screen snap shot above).

❑ To click on the Home Page or Profile or your Inbox (to write or send messages to friends) at any time, use the menu options at the top of your screen.

5. Privacy Concerns

If you want to use Facebook, you should read about Facebook’s privacy settings right away. For example, restricting your profile to “only my friends” rather than “all my networks and all my friends” (which is the default option) is an effective way to protect your privacy on Facebook. Another example, as well, is when you create a photo album to share pictures with your friends, make sure to check off “only my friends” as opposed to “everyone” to ensure that only your friends will see your photos.

You can also use a psuedonymn (e.g. John Smith) rather than your real name. Keep in mind, though, that in order for people to find you, you have to give them the actual name you are using on Facebook – they may not be able to find you otherwise.

Please see the following sites to learn more about how Facebook’s extensive privacy settings can help make your online social experiences safer.

Welcome to Facebook!

Facebook has a number of features with which users may interact (in alphabetical order):

• Chat: instant messaging application that allows users to communicate with friends live

• Marketplace: lets users post free classified ads; comparable to Craigslist but listings posted by a user on Marketplace are only seen by users that are in the same network as that user, whereas listings posted on Craigslist can be seen by anyone online

• News Feed: displayed on every user’s Home page; highlights information including profile changes, upcoming events and birthdays of the user’s friends. This feature is also customizable depending upon what kind of information the user wants to share with his/her friends

• Notes: blogging feature that allows you to write long, detailed notes and to tag friends and embed images

• Photos: users can upload photos, organize them into albums and share

• Pokes: allows users to virtually “poke” each other

• Status: users can inform their friends of their state of mind, whereabouts or actions (very similar to blog-type entries)

• The Wall: a space on every user’s Profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user to see. As a result, any messages posted will be seen by anyone who visits that user’s Profile page.
