SUBSTITUTE TEACHER-SPECIAL EDUCATION

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The job of Substitute Teacher, Special Education is done for the purpose of developing special education student success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs as identified by Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P); providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

FUNCTIONS: Provides direct instruction to students, corresponding to academic needs as identified in students I.E.P.'s Advises parents and/or legal guardian of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations,

developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment Assesses students' social needs (e.g. behavioral, communication, etc.), academic needs, progress, expectations,

goals etc. for the purpose of evaluating students and family requirements, placement and success of the program Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the

quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school

program and addressing the needs of individual students Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills

through a defined course of study Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information Prepares teaching materials and related reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose

of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of

maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies Performs job assignments safely for the purpose of protecting people and property (E) Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math including calculation of fractions, percents and/or ratios; interpret written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; and understand multiple step instructions.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions.

ABILITY to schedule activities; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; use basic job- related equipment; communicate effectively orally and in writing in English is required and in Spanish is desirable; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; work with data of similar types and/or purposes; problem solve to analyze issues, create plans of action, and reach solutions; problem solving with data is limited and with equipment is limited;

maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with staff, the public, and other agency personnel; perform overtime as needed and perform job safely.

RESPONSIBILITY: Responsibilities include: working under standardized instructions and/or routines focusing primarily on results; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.

WORKING ENVIROMENT: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 15% sitting, 40% walking and 45% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift or move light equipment (20 pounds or less), record boxes, to bend or reach for files, and/or climb stairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE: Experience relevant to the job functions will be considered when making the selection decision.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in from an accredited college/university; Master's Degree desirable.

CERTIFICATES/CREDENTIALS/LICENSES: Possession of a valid California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the Special Education or Multiple or Single Subject teaching credential or Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit. Verification of of meeting the Basic Skills Requirement Valid California Driver's License
