Scope of new Pre-K-8 school clearer for School Board

Interior descriptions and cost projections provided for new Pope School

JACKSON, Tenn. ? Members of the Jackson-Madison County School Board have a clearer picture of the structural and financial ranges involved in completing a new PreK-8 campus to replace Pope Elementary School. David Stewart and Sarah Dexheimer of architecture and interior design firm Orcutt/Winslow outlined several recommendations that will impact the school's final design.

Expanding Pope from K-6 to PreK-8, and setting enrollment capacity between 900-1,000 students, are among the most basic objectives for the new school. Orcutt/Winslow provided three different design briefs that varied by enrollment, square footage, and total construction costs.

"This is out of an effort to be completely realistic and responsible with the numbers. We just want to make sure that everybody is aware of the choices being made going forward," Dexheimer said.

Although building costs nationwide have increased since the Pope project was tabled a little more than a year ago, the design team provided various design briefs that differ by amenities and total costs. Projected class sizes for the campus varied from 20-25 students per classroom with a total of 146,000 square footage for the school in the largest design option.

"The good thing this does is it really shows people what the true costs are," Board member Sherry Franks said.

Representatives from Henson Construction estimate labor and material costs have risen significantly since January 2020. Many of the rooms are drafted to serve multiple functions. The end goal is to provide functional spaces that meet the need for educating and supporting whole child learning.

"This is a responsible way of housing all of the students that you need, providing the services that are needed, might be a happy medium in between," Dexheimer said.
