MEPs: Speeches, opinions, statements of position or statements by national or other MEPs related to the European context. Articles about national MEPs are always before the articles about MEPs of other nationalities.

The European Context: a selection of the most representative articles in the media that relate to the European Union or which could have an effect on the EU (relations with the EU, elections, referenda, social policy, finance, opinion pools, etc).

The National Context: a selection of the most representative articles in the media, including the main news for the day in (the country name).

Food aid to 18 million EU citizens

An EU programme will continue to supply food to the EU's most deprived citizens for until the end of 2013, thanks to a rescue plan agreed with the Council and approved in plenary session on Wednesday. The scheme, with a budget of up to €500 million per year, currently provides food aid for 18 million people living in poverty in 20 EU Member States. "The current economic crisis, together with difficult weather conditions, has had a severe impact on the poor. Nearly 18 million homeless, unemployed, elderly or handicapped people, but also large families and single parents, benefit from the programme today. It is good that the EU remembers them. But the most important task is to ensure that the programme will continue to provide food to poor and needy EU citizens also after 2014", said European Parliament's rapporteur MEP Czesław Adam Siekierski (EPP).
