Joseph L. Keller

Joseph Keller joined the Faculty of the University of Southern California on a full time basis in September of 1999. He is a Professor of Clinical Accounting, and primarily teaches in the Masters of Business Taxation Program in the Leventhal School of Accounting.

Prior to coming to USC on a full time basis Joe spent 29 years with the international public accounting firm, Arthur Andersen LLP. Joe joined Andersen’s Los Angeles tax division in 1970 and became a partner in 1980. His main areas of concentration included the financial services, manufacturing, and real estate industries.

He held numerous leadership positions with Arthur Andersen and for many years was the partner-in-charge of the firm's federal tax practice in Los Angeles. He also served as the partner-in-charge of Arthur Andersen's Los Angeles Japanese Business Organization tax practice and partner-in-charge of the Financial Services tax practice. He was a senior member of the firmwide Banking and Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) tax teams. In addition, he was a member of the firmwide Financial Markets Americas Industry Team.

While serving as a tax partner he assisted other members of the firm in dealing with litigation relating to practice issues and represented the firm in arbitration discussions.

Since his retirement from Andersen, in addition to teaching at the University of Southern California he provides expert witness services to law firms and in-house tax training courses to local and national CPA firms.

As a professor at the University of Southern California, Joe has been very involved in creating new courses for the Masters of Business Taxation Program. Early in his teaching experience he created a Tax Accounting Methods course and more recently created and is teaching an Income Tax Accounting and Auditing course which has become one of the most popular electives in the MBT and MAcc programs. In addition Joe has developed and is teaching courses in the MBT online program.

He has also been heavily involved helping to organize, administer and teach in a special program with Price Waterhouse Coopers in which the Leventhal School of Accounting has been engaged to provide U. S. tax education to their international professionals who are coming to spend two and a half years in various U.S. offices as part of their Global Tax Immersion Program.

Partner-in-charge of a multimillion dollar trust tax engagement for Bank of America/Security Pacific Bank, one of the firm's largest tax outsourcing arrangements

Partner-in-charge of tax recruiting for the Pacific Southwest

Taught numerous courses for Arthur Andersen personnel related to Senior Career Development and Leadership

Served as Chairman of Arthur Andersen's United States Partners Issues Task Force

Frequent speaker at national and local tax seminars for organizations such as the Bank Tax Institute, International Bankers Association of California, National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, California Credit Union, and The Intermountain Accounting Seminar

Frequent speaker on current tax topics for such respected civic organizations as Town Hall Los Angeles and The Los Angeles Rotary Club.

Participated in the Constitutional Rights Foundation's "Business in the Classroom" program

Developed and taught a number of tax-related courses for Arthur Andersen and Golden Gate University

Has written articles for (NAREIT) the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts' periodical entitled, "The REIT Report"

Co-authored an article entitled, "Coping With Legislation Changes Which Impact The Income Taxation of Trusts and Estates" for the University of Southern California Law publication entitled "Major Tax Planning"

Served as an expert witness in litigation concerning various tax matters

Developed and delivered both in-person and virtual tax training for local and national CPA firms

Consulted with accounting firms on the development of their training programs
