GORDON GRILL'S SURF & TURF Have the best of both worlds as meat and seafood (right) come together in Gordon Grill's recently launched Surf & Turf menu.

Start with the refreshing appetiser of chilled Japanese king crab, Australian crispy prosciutto, heirloom tomatoes and yuzu pineapple gazpacho, followed by a Japanese-inspired soup of sous-vide organic egg, red prawn, spinach and daikon in a seaweed broth.

For the Surf mains, choose from hamachi fillet with red capsicum, grilled tiger prawn or Hokkaido scallop with parmesan herb gratin.

For Turf options, pick from beef tenderloin with red wine jus, pork jowl with smoked pork sauce or lamb chop with green peppercorn jus.

It is difficult to choose, I know, but I'd recommend the juicy scallop and beef tenderloin.

Complete the meal with Mirabelle plum mousse genoise served with chocolate ice cream and berry ragout. WHERE: Goodwood Park Hotel, 22 Scotts Road MRT: Orchard WHEN: Till June 30, noon to 2.30pm (weekdays), 7 to 10.30pm daily PRICE: Lunch: $78++ for three courses (either appetiser or soup); dinner: $98++ for four courses TEL: 6730-1744 INFO: E-mail gordon_grill@goodwood

SPICY RAMEN AT KARAMEN Spicy ramen is usually my go-to order in ramen joints.

So the new Karamen ramen outlet, at the revamped 111 Somerset mall, is right up my alley. Karamen is said to originate from the Miyazaki prefecture and the spicy soup is mixed with eggs, so this version is not just jazzed up with a mere drizzle of chilli oil or a scoop of spicy minced meat to be mixed into the ramen.

The outlet is by food and beverage group Japan Foods Holding, which also runs its flagship brand Ajisen Ramen.

The karamen (above) is priced from $11.90 and you can pick from three spice levels. I go straight for level three, and barely break a sweat. As it is not too spicy, I am able to drink most of the soup. The noodles are cooked al dente and you can choose either pork cha shu or shabu shabu-style meat.

For the finishing touch, leave just enough soup to mix in the extra spoon of rice that comes with the ramen.

A more unusual option is the tonkotsu paitan ramen ($12.90), where vinegar is added to the original pork soup base. Initially, I am uncertain whether I like it, but after drinking a few spoonfuls of soup, the tangy flavour grows on me. I also like that there are raw onions in the soup, which work well with the vinegar and add crunch to the dish.

Another option is to add ebi la yu ? a housemade prawn chilli oil ? which provides a delicious dose of umami to the soup.

It does not sound like it could work, but the flavours come together and, again, I finish everything. WHERE: Karamen, 01-07 111 Somerset, 111 Orchard Road MRT: Somerset OPEN: 11.30am to 10pm daily TEL: 6235-0152

DELICIOUS ROASTED CHICKEN AT CHICO LOCO I cannot remember the last time I had some good ol' roast chicken.

The one-monthold Mexican spit-roasted chicken eatery Chico Loco by The Loco Group ? which is behind Super Loco at Customs House and Robertson Quay, and Lucha Loco in Duxton ? uses organic cage-free chicken, which is brined for 10 hours and basted with a blend of herbs and spices. The result is a fork-tender juicy chicken (above) with a delicious roasted skin, priced from $9 for a quarter portion. If you are not keen on chicken, go for the dry-rubbed lamb shoulder ($12 for 125g, $23 for 250g) ? also cooked to perfection, leaving it moist and tender. It goes best with the chimichurri yogurt sauce ($2). Complement the meats with sides such as rotisserie fat rice with tomatillos and sesame ($4), reminiscent of local chicken rice; and somtam-inspired Chicoslaw ($6), with mango, green papaya and macadamia nuts. For snacks, go for the Mexican prawn toast ($13) topped with chilli and pickled cucumber; and chipotle chicken croquettes ($7). Cocktails are available, but for something refreshing during lunch, try the sparkling fruit agua frescas ($5) with pineapple and calamansi or passionfruit and mango. GRILLED DISHES SHINE AT YUJIN IZAKAYA Kick back at the Les Amis Group's two-month-old Yujin Izakaya? part of the group's expansion plans this year.

Similar to its sister sumiyaki outlet Jinjo at Shaw Centre, items on the menu at Yujin Izakaya celebrate the ingredients and are not overly embellished.

Highlights include grilled eringi or king oyster mushroom ($8); tontoro or Iberico pork jowl ($15); and fugu mirinboshi ($13), strips of dried pufferfish which are great as a bar snack. Do not miss the kabocha or butternut pumpkin ($5), which is simply grilled, seasoned

with salt and topped with slabs of butter. More filling items include the Katsu Sando ($16), a beef

katsu sandwich; and Inaniwa Udon ($18), served in a prawn broth and topped with prawn tempura. Pair the food with a selection of shochu, beer, sake and wine.

Certainly, the group is headed in the right direction this year and I'm looking forward to its new offerings. WHERE: 56 Zion Road MRT: Tiong Bahru OPEN: 5 to 11pm (Mondays to Thursdays), 5pm to midnight (Fridays and Saturdays), closed on Sundays TEL: 6235-0429 INFO: .sg
