Reading aloud to children

The stories read aloud to children are their introduction to the

world of books. Reading to young children shows them how

to use books: reading from left to right and top to bottom,

turning pages, and recognizing illustrations and words.

Reading aloud also increases exposure to language,

vocabulary, and ideas, which builds background knowledge

and comprehension.

Motivating children to read

Explore the child¡¯s interests. With various themes, genres,

subjects, and writing styles, the RRL has something for

everyone.

Make reading interactive by discussing the story. Talk about

the characters, setting, and events. Use imagination and

creativity to involve the child in the story. Ask questions that

make them feel a part of it.

? If you could be friends with anyone in the book, who would

it be? Why (character¡¯s name)?

Wordless picture books are ideal for developing creative and

linear thinking.

? How would you feel if (specific story event) happened to

you?

? Begin by reviewing the title and cover. What do they

tell you about the story?

? Did you like the story¡¯s ending? How would you change it?

Keep going!

Don¡¯t stop reading to the child just because they can read

independently. Try reading longer books one chapter at

a time to introduce advanced vocabulary, plotlines, and

sentence structures. Continue to talk about and recommend

books to them.

To help widen the child¡¯s exposure to different ideas and

experiences, encourage them to read books from different

genres or authors. At the same time, continue to encourage

the child to read more of what they enjoy. Above all, reading

should be positive, engaging, and fun!

? Encourage the child to tell the story through the

illustrations and make predictions.

? Finally, read it again and support the child¡¯s own

version of the story.
