DIRECTOR'S CORNER
"BE ALL THE PA YOU CAN BE"
In these "belt tightening" economic times, it benefits us all to expand our professional duties, broaden our awareness, and enhance our patient skills to the best of our abilities to meet the needs of the Cleveland Clinic System.
In 2006, the Ohio law changed to increase the physicians' utilization of PA's. In hospital practice, the PA's became governed by the Medical Staff Credentialing body, allowing them to perform special procedures after showing competency.
In 2007, Ohio PA's welcomed the ability to apply for their certificate to prescribe.
And in 2008, the PA's in Ohio were granted the ability to apply for their DEA numbers, allowing them to write for schedule III, IV and V's.
Accordingly, as the Ohio law changed, your PA practice should have expanded.
Gone are the days of performing as a medical assistant. Gone are the days of being called a "clinical assistant or surgical clinician". There is now pride and honor in being a PA in Ohio.
And with this pride and honor come responsibility; responsibility to our supervising physicians, responsibility to our patients and responsibility to us. We are responsible for becom-

ing the best PA we possibly can be. We are responsible for expanding our practice to the fullest that it can be expanded.
And we are responsible for developing innovative ideas on how we, as PA's, during these trying economic times, can fully use our professional resources and deliver quality, assessable healthcare to our patients.
Be all the PA you can be. This is our battle cry for 2009! We have made great strides in the last number of years. Let's move forward with great expectations and hope. Hope for more expansion on the PA role in patient care. Hope for increase access to our patients provided by the PA's. And hope for possibly newer legislation allowing expanded scheduled drug coverage.
These are my wishes for you for the New Year along with my commitment to do everything in my power to make them come true.
Thank you again, for all you do on a daily basis, taking care of your patients and colleagues.
Be all the PA you can be.
Thanks for reading. Carpe Diem.

MT. UNION COLLEGE
Alliance, OH
PA PROGRAM
Under the Direction of Ms. Sharon Luke PA-C, Mt. Union College is preparing to accept its first class of PA students this May. We are proud to collaborate with Mt. Union and host this class on site for their gross anatomy classes.
Starting in May, and every Monday for the next 12 weeks, the entire first year class will come on site and study under the tutorage of Dr. Drake and Dr. McBride in our anatomy labs.
This is our first joint effort with a PA program of providing a full class on site here at main campus.
To prepare for this, the entire class will go through a day of orientation on Friday, April 3. Pat Ginley had kindly volunteered his time to facilitate this orientation session. The students will learn our EPIC system, receive their badges and parking passes and then orient to the cadaver labs with Dr. Drake and Dr. McBride. Pat will then give them the grand tour of our fine campus. It is at this time I would hope some of you would have it a moment to interact with the students if they should pass through your area.
We are all looking forward to hosting this inaugural class of PA students from Mt. Union College. I know you will all welcome them with open arms.
