TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

18th OCTOBER 2015

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. "Master," they said to him "we want you to do us a favour." He said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?'' They said to him, "Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory." "You do not know what you are asking" Jesus said to them. "Can you drink the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be baptised?" They replied, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant: they belong to those to whom they have been allotted."

When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man Himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

NOVEMBER PIOUS LIST: November is a special month of prayer for those who have departed this life, but who are still undergoing purification before they enjoy the vision of God – those whom we describe as the souls in purgatory, not yet in heaven.

Obviously we do not know which of our departed relatives, friends and benefactors are already in heaven, and which are still on the way there, paying the debt to Divine Justice for sins committed and omissions here on earth. We have good reason to be optimistic about those who lived good and holy lives, prayed regularly, attended Mass and received the Sacraments frequently.

However, as we know, there are many who are careless and lackadaisical about their spiritual lives, and who go to God relatively unprepared for His final Judgement. Not wicked reprobates who have persistently rejected God and His Mercy, to be sure, but not perfect saints either! It is these imperfect souls who need our prayers. One day we will probably be amongst them, and grateful for the prayers and Masses of others! .

The November Pious List is a way of remembering all the deceased. You will find the envelopes and sheets for the names of your loved ones at the back of the church. Please complete the lists and enclose your offering. The envelopes can be put in the Mass collections or handed into the Parish Office marked Pious List. The offerings are added together to make up £10 Mass stipends, for one Mass to be offered every day during November for the souls on the Pious List. Extra Masses will be celebrated here later or sent away for other priests to celebrate. DEACON NORMAN will do the parish Annual Cemetery visit on Monday 2nd November at 1.00pm (come rain or shine). Please inform Deacon Norman which grave you would like him to bless and pray at.

FIRST FRIDAYS AND FIRST SATURDAYS OF THE MONTH: Many of you will be aware that we observe the First Friday of the month with the Litany of the Sacred Heart. As from November, we would like to observe the First Saturdays according to the promises of Our Lady of Fatima. I would be grateful if the Consecration prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Rosary would be recited on each Saturday after the Midday Holy Mass. You will find more information in the narthex. I wholeheartedly encourage parishioners and visitors to stay after Mass and lead the Rosary. I would like the Rosary to be said every day if possible and I am grateful for the support of our parishioners and friends who do this.’ Through the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the Sacred Heart of Jesus’, Amen.

The Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF) assists each and every one of the Catholic Church's 1,069 mission dioceses to provide pastoral care and preach the Gospel effectively. It was founded in Lyons, France, in 1822 by a young French woman, Pauline-Marie Jaricot. She began by persuading local working people to support overseas mission by giving a farthing a week. A century later, when the organisation was established in almost every country in the world, Pope Pius XI made it the official mission-funding society for the Catholic Church.

The APF in England and Wales works collaboratively with the Mill Hill Missionary Society; the only major missionary society to have been formed in England. Mill Hill missionaries are sent to the most remote places in the world to show the love of Christ to those who are in need, both spiritually and materially. In England and Wales, funds for overseas mission are collected through the famous Red Boxes. These can be found in 200,000 homes and they have helped raise millions of pounds for the missionary Church.
