SAINTS OF THE WEEK: St Charles Borromeo (1538-84) studied canon and civil law and aged 21was made a lay cardinal by his uncle Pope Pius IV in 1560. Unlike some, Charles proved worthy of the office. He played a leading part in the last sessions of the Council of Trent and drafted the Catechism. He was ordained priest and then bishop in 1564, to take up the post of Archbishop of Milan. For 80 years Milan had had no resident Archbishop. Monasteries were "full of disorder"; many religious were "lazy, ignorant, and debauched." St Charles proved a fearless reformer. He established seminaries, and organizations for the religious education of children. In the famine and plague of 1576, he exhausted all his own wealth to feed the starving and the sick. He supported Catholic refugees who had fled Elizabeth I’s protestantized England, and encouraged newly-ordained priests – some of them future martyrs like Edmund Campion– returning from Rome to support the persecuted English Catholics.

CHRISTMAS CARDS have arrived and they are excellent value. We also have a limited number of Catholic diaries 2016. Please purchase from the meeting room

LITTLE CHURCH: There will be a meeting for Leaders & Helpers in the Parish Centre (bar area) on Thursday 5th November at 8 pm. We will be planning Advent workshops and the Christmas Day Holy Mass. Please do come and support us. Thank you.

SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS - 1st NOVEMBER 2015

Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There He sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then He began to speak. This is what He taught them.

"How blessed are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage. Blessed those who mourn: they shall be comforted. Blessed those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied. Blessed the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them. Blessed the pure in heart: they shall see God. Blessed the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God. Blessed those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven."
