Happy New Year

One of the things I managed to do in the period between Christmas and New Year was a trip to the cinema with some of the younger members of the family. The majority vote was in favour of the final episode of The Hobbit and everyone agreed to meet at the Odeon in Liverpool One. Being the first one there I decided to get in the queue for tickets without realising that technology had moved on a bit since the last time I was at the pictures. I could get my head around the option of 2D or 3D, but the choice between Widescreen or Imax was a new one on me and the clarification that it was akin to the difference between HD and Ultra HD with a curved screen didn’t really help. Anyway with the encouragement that we should try the Imax in 3D a small fortune changed hands and off we went to experience this new technology. Most of the time we were pinned to the seats by the volume and depth of sound apart from the times when one or other sat up in shock as images seemed to jump at us from the screen. By the end we all came out feeling that we had made the journey with the little hobbit and fought in the battle at the end. It was a great experience but probably a technological bridge too far for me. Anyway I know we can’t compete with ultra HD in our newsletters this year but we hope to try and offer encouragement for us all to enter fully into the life of the Cathedral, both its liturgy and community life, over the course of 2015.

A Happy New Year and may it be a year full of blessings for us all.

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord renewing our baptism promises and resolving to witness to our faith over the coming year.

The children’s Epiphany Service takes place on Tuesday afternoon and it is the turn of Liverpool Cathedral to host it this year.

The Joint Choral Evening Prayer to mark the start of the week of Prayer for Christian Unity next Sunday afternoon will also be held at Liverpool Cathedral this year. The clergy here have yet to draw lots to decide who will be preaching at this.

It was announced on the news that Pope Francis is raffling off his Christmas presents for charity. One of the most bizarre items was a tandem cycle – I’m not sure what the donor had in mind perhaps for a bodyguard or clerical secretary to ride along with him. I don’t think that we would make a great deal if we raffled unwanted presents in Cathedral House and the fact is that most have been eaten already. But if anyone has any unwanted gifts that they will not use we can always sell them at the Car Boot Sale in February to support the Cathedral!

STEWARDS

We are currently looking for volunteers to join our team of Cathedral Stewards. The main purpose of the role of Steward is to welcome regular members of our congregation and visitors to our services and Mass at the Cathedral. They assist also by taking the collection, with communion arrangements and giving out service sheets and answering all manner of questions and queries. On bigger occasions they would be invaluable showing people to their seats. No experience is needed as full training would be given. All you need is to be able to give the time – mostly on Sundays but there will be some Sunday afternoon services and weekday services when a presence will be required, as well as all the major Feasts such as Easter and Christmas. You would also need to be warm and welcoming with a big smile; patient and enthusiastic and have a sense of humour. If you think you could give a few hours to this valuable work and become a member of the Cathedral family please contact Claire Hanlon for further details on

c.hanlon@.uk or 709 9222, extension 201. A very warm welcome awaits you.

THANK YOU

We received a letter from the Women’s Refuge on the Wirral saying, ‘We would like to thank everyone from the Cathedral who gave so generously by donating toys and gifts to make Christmas special for survivors of Domestic Abuse. Happy New Year.’

We also received a further letter from the refuge in Liverpool saying, ‘We would like to say a big thank you from the women and children at Liverpool Domestic Abuse Service for all of the gifts of toys, sweets and gifts we received from you and to let you know that it made a massive difference to all here at ***** House and also ***** House. They were really appreciated by everyone. Best wishes for the New Year.’

The response we had from everyone was amazing especially as people were still managing to donate for the Hope+ Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously.

ST NICHOLAS’ SCHOOL

Happy New Year to you all. School began again this week and the Spring term is already filling up. We celebrated the feast of the Epiphany together and we welcomed new members to our school family, including into our Bluebirds nursery. Don’t forget that leaflets and more information about Bluebirds is displayed on the St Nicholas display board in the Crypt. Our new Come and See topics are centred around the Local Church and children will learn about a variety of themes including celebrations, books, community

and how we can continue Jesus’ mission in our Parish. We have already thought about the New Year and Resolutions. Our school display has been changed in the Crypt by our Year 5s, who would like to share their Resolutions with you. This weekend, our With You Always children will come together, with their families, for their 4th Sacrament preparation session with Father Ged and I. This month we will consider how the Holy Spirit can help us. “I am with you always close by, ready to help. Yes, forever, until the end of time (Matthew 28:20) Mrs Vicki Fallon stnicholasliverpool.co.uk

EMBROIDERY FOR PLEASURE CLASS

The Embroidery Studio at the Metropolitan Cathedral is running an ‘Embroidery for Pleasure’ series of classes for 12 weeks beginning 16 January 2015. All are very welcome from beginners to experienced embroiderers who would like to learn new skills. The classes will run on Friday afternoons from 1pm – 4pm; the cost for each session is just £5 and will include refreshments. To book a place on the course or to make further enquiries please contact enquiries@.uk or phone 709 9222.

PLEASE NOTE

That from Monday 19 January to Friday 30 January 2015 inclusive the Crypt will be closed to all visitors.

This is because Liverpool University will be holding examinations in the Crypt during this period. The 12.15pm daily Mass will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel throughout this period. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

EVENSONG

Sung by the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir and the Liverpool Cathedral Choir will take place at the Anglican Cathedral on Sunday 18 January, at 3.00pm to mark the start of Christian Unity Week. All are welcome to attend.
