Advertisements - Year 8 English
Persuasive Language
While companies are not allowed to lie about the products or services they offer, they want to advertise them in such a way that encourages consumers to buy from them - as opposed to other companies. As such, they will use interesting and exciting adjectives in their advertisements to make their products sound more appealing.
Task 1
Your teacher will model and discuss with you how to separate facts from opinions in the first holiday brochure page. Underline or highlight the words or phrases that provide facts about the hotel. In another colour, underline or highlight the words or phrases that provide opinions about the hotel.
Task 2
Rewrite the blurb for the hotel below, changing weak or boring descriptions to make it sound more appealing. You can use the word bank over the page to help you.
Hotel Bahia Princess
With its nice pillars and nice staircase sweeping up from a pool, this hotel has almost a Greek temple feel to it. And when floodlit at night, it’s positively nice. Yet for all its nice looks, you’ll find a refreshingly nice atmosphere with no airs and graces - so you can simply relax.
The nice feel extends to the bedrooms - they’re nice and okay, dressed in turquoise and gold. Outside, the nice grounds are split over three levels, with pools on each, all flanked by nice terraces. When you feel like getting active, you can use all the nice facilities at the nearby Guayarmina Princess, with tennis, squash and a sauna available.
On the dining side, the average buffet restaurant has showcooking in the evenings and you can have your main course served at your table if you wish. Dinner al fresco, looking down at the nice floodlit pools, is another option.
There’s a feeling of escaping the outside world when you’re at the Bahia Princess, but you’re actually not far from all the action - nice Playa de las Americas is just three kilometres away. For something a little more boring, go the other way and you’ll find yourself in Playa del Duque, a nice little spot with boutiques and jewellery shops.
Extension Task:
Create your own hotel description, making sure you use interesting and appealing adjectives to describe your hotel’s facilities and its location. You can create your own hotel name or use one of the suggestions below:
• Sunset Apartments
• Marina Bay Hotel
• Hotel Majestic
Benidorm Costa Blanca

Hotel Don Pancho ****
The Hotel Don Pancho is a striking building that juts up into the Benidorm skyline, meaning it stands, quite literally, head and shoulders above the rest. It makes the same impression on TripAdvisor, too – guests regularly give it 5 star ratings. Inside, it’s just as bold. Move into the lobby and you’ll find a huge room dotted with brown leather sofas, big chunky glass-topped tables, and pillars daubed with Aztec-like etchings. The lounge is impressive, too. It’s
kitted out with comfy crescent-shaped chairs and high-backed stools, but it’s the elaborate wall carving that sits next to it that really takes the limelight.
As for the bedrooms, they’re a much more sedate affair. With comfy beds and wooden furniture, the walls have been painted in a warm peach and white colour scheme. What’s more, they’re all air-conditioned and come with their own private balcony.
Outside, two rectangular swimming pools sit side-by-side in a sun terrace. One is especially for the little ones. They’re pulled right up close to the hotel, and come surrounded with sunbeds and sunshine-yellow parasols. And there’s a pool bar open during the summer, so drinks and
snacks are close at hand.
Elsewhere, there’s the spa to tempt you. You’ll find a Finnish sauna and a menu of treatments like massages, manicures and facials in the beauty salon. As for the evening, there’s plenty going on. For starters, there’s a live band six nights a week, while cabaret acts are also on the cards. Think magic shows, balancing acts and flamenco dancing.
