PASTORAL REFLECTION

Jesus said to His disciples, "Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." (Luke 12:32-34)

Teaching his disciples, Jesus links the Kingdom of heaven with "sell your belongings and give alms." Certainly, giving money to those who are in need is a way to prepare ourselves to receive something greater, the kingdom of God, which is life with God our Father forever. And the Lord further explains that when we give alms, we are providing for ourselves an "inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy."

But what if we don't want to sell our belongings and give alms? Although we do need some things, Jesus is still drawing us to a more radical trust in Him. Consequently, we grow in the virtue of charity, that particular dimension of love "by which we love God above all things for His own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 1822).

Among all the works of mercy, giving alms to the poor is one of the most important witnesses to the supernatural virtue of charity. As Jesus says through Sacred Scripture, He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none and he who has food must do likewise. (Luke 3:11)... If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, `Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? (James 2:15-16)... Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more." (Luke 12:48)

Peace in Jesus through Mary,

"I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it." (Jesus to St. Faustina, Diary, n. 742)

Seminarian Adam Feisthamel

We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to our seminarian Adam Feisthamel, as he completes his summer assignment with our parishes on August 15. Adam has been a faithful Adorer and immersed himself in many ways at our parishes, such as constructing St. Ann's Corpus Christi canopy, taking photos at our events, participating in the Theology of the Body course, visiting parishioners in the hospital, visiting the prisons, and many other things. May our Lord and Blessed Mother be very close to him as he continues his formation toward the Priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Catechist Meeting

There will be a catechist meeting for all Our Lady of Hope & St. Ann's catechists this Monday, August 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope Parish Hall. Dinner and refreshments will be served. All catechists are urged to attend! Thank you!

Weekly Confession Quotation

"Three conditions are necessary for Penance: contrition, which is sorrow for sin, together with a purpose of amendment; confession of sins without any omission; and satisfaction by means of good works." -St. Thomas Aquinas

Please see front cover for times of healing.

Weekly Scripture Passage

"God chose us in him before the world began, to be holy and blsmeless in his sight, to be full of love." (Ephesians 1:3)

WEEKLY ADORATION QUOTATION

"It is most heartening to learn that young men and women, in their late teens and twenties, are increasingly attracted to meditative prayer in the Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. May all the faithful find in the Eucharist their source of strength and courage to imitate our Lady, totally open to his will in their daily lives. It is my hope that this devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist will spread to more and more parishes and dioceses across our nation." -John Cardinal O'Connor
