Course Scope:

This one-year course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills for further studies in mathematics. It is intended to increase mathematical fluency in problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of number, algebra, functions, and statistics. Students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) have diverse needs and course accommodations and/or modifications may be required based upon IEP identified need. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of mathematical tools and technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills the Algebra I requirement and one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

Course Goals:

1. To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

2. To extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents and use properties of rational and irrational numbers. [N.RN]

3. To reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems. [N.Q]

4. To interpret the structure of expressions and write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems. [A.SSE]

5. To perform arithmetic operations on polynomials. [A.APR]

6. To create equations that describe numbers or relationships. [A.CED]

7. To understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning; solve equations and inequalities in one variable; solve systems of equations; and represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically. [A.REI]

8. To understand the concept of a function and use function notation; interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context; and analyze functions using different representations. [F.IF]

9. To build a function that models a relationship between two quantities; and build new functions from existing functions. [F.BF]

10. To construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems; and interpret expressions for functions in terms of the situation they model. [F.LE]

Classroom Supplies

Students will need the following supplies by the end of the second week of classes:

• Spiral notebook

• Pencils w/erasers (all math work must be done in pencil)

• Basic 4 function calculator (can be bought at the dollar store Elkhorn/Durango)

• Loose leaf paper (for class assignments and homework)

• At least 4 different color pens (for notes)

• Graph paper

Coming to class unprepared is unacceptable! If I supply you with a pencil and/or paper, participation points will be deducted.

Grading

Percentages: Quarters 1 / 3 = 45%

Quarters 2 / 4 = 45%

Semester Exam = 10% All students take the final.

All work, both classwork and homework, will be graded. Work will be returned to the student, with the grade, and needs to be kept in the correct place in their class notebook. There will be periodic notebook checks.

Classwork = 35% This includes all work done in the class, including projects. The value of individual assignments will be based on the length and degree of difficulty. All math work must be shown. (Papers with no work shown will not be graded.)

Homework = 30% This is work done outside of class. It will reinforce skills and concepts learned in the class.

Tests = 25% Will include both open-book and closed-book tests. Tests will include true/false, multiple choice, matching, and free response. After each chapter, a chapter test will be give. All math work must be shown. (Papers with no work shown will not be graded.)

Participation = 10% Participation grade will be based on classroom participation.

Grading Scale:

A = 100-90 percent

B = 89-80 percent

C = 79-70 percent

D = 69-60 percent

F = 59- 0 percent (An F for the semester will result in loss of credit)

Citizenship Grades:

Infractions will include tardies as well as failure to follow school and classroom rules and guidelines.

E = No more than two infractions.

S = No more than three infractions.

N = No more than four infractions.

U = More than four infractions OR a teacher referral for behavior (results in an automatic U for the quarter).

Tardy Policy:

A tardy sign sheet will be maintained in class. When a tardy occurs, the student will sign the tardy sheet.

1st Tardy = Teacher warning/Parent Link phone call.

2nd Tardy = Teacher call home/Parent Link phone call.

3rd Tardy = Teacher Detention/Parent Link phone call.

4th Tardy = Teacher Detention /Parent Link phone call.

5th Tardy = Teacher Detention /Parent Link phone call.

6th Tardy = Teacher Detention/Parent Link phone call.

Classwork and Homework Policy

All work (except tests and quizzes) will be turned in the following day (unless otherwise stated by teacher). There are three reasons for this: (1) it helps to build responsibility, (2) it allows parents to be involved and know what is being covered in class, and (3) it allows the student additional time to complete assignments. Students are expected to complete and turn in all classwork/homework assignments. (In math, homework reinforces the concepts learned during the class period. Studies have indicated that students who review information they learned in class within seven hours of sleeping retain more information, which is the purpose of homework.)

Absence Make-Up Work

After any absence, students shall be required to initiate contact with the teacher to obtain appropriate make-up work within three (3) days directly following the absence. Once the student has requested make-up work from the teacher, the teacher will give the student the work and time allotted to complete the assignment(s). The time will be determined by the teacher, based on the amount and difficulty of the assignment.

Cell Phone Usage

Cell phone use is allowed before and after school and during lunch in the quad area. Using a cell phone at any other time is grounds for confiscation.
