JOB SUMMARY: As an employee of the Nooksack Tribal Health Clinic administrative staff team, the medical receptionist will work closely with all members of the Nooksack Tribal Health Clinic and administrative staff to ensure prompt, efficient and friendly service is provided to all visitors, patients and clients. A courteous, professional attitude and appearance must be maintained. The position performs specific tasks and duties related to medical reception, while assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Nooksack Tribal Health Clinic. This position is equally responsible for assuring confidential client information is maintained and in compliance with Federal HIPPA and Indian Health Service compliance standards. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or ability required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Check in patients for appointments. 2. Gather confidential patient information, confirming patient demographics and insurance information at each clinic visit. 3. Responsible for accurate and timely data entry. 4. Provide courteous and prompt service to clients and patients, including answering and referring callers to appropriate health clinic staff members. 5. Respond to questions by phone and in person concerning health clinic services available, and processes and answering general questions about the clinic and community outreach services. 6. Oversee waiting room activities and identifying patients who need immediate attention and notifying the Triage Nurse or Health Care provider on duty. 7. Make courtesy reminder calls to patients and clients with scheduled appointments. 8. Print the daily schedule, assuring delivery to nurses and providers. 9. Receive, verify and update confidential patient information into RPMS and the Electronic Health Records to ensure validity, completeness, accuracy and confidentiality of client and/or patient health care records. 10. Assure proper filing of client and/or patient's confidential medical information into the individual medical record. 11. Assist with patient registration as needed. 12. Perform other duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and periodically throughout course of employment. Must pass extensive criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.

INDIAN PREFERENCE: Indian preference applies to this and all position with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: One year related experience. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) and Emergency First Aid Certification (must be obtained within six months of hire and kept current thereafter).

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Medical Terminology Certification required. Medical Assistant Certificate required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY: Computer literate with specific working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Familiarity with electronic health records Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with Nooksack health department staff, supervisors and clients, verbally and in writing. Maintain a courteous and professional rapport with patients, clients and staff of the Nooksack Tribal Community. Must be respectful and sensitive to the values and culture of the Nooksack Tribal Community. Must become familiar with the Nooksack Tribal Community, health department and available resources for patients, clients and families. Ability to apply common sense and critical thinking skills when carrying out written or oral instructions. Ability to effectively deal with a variety of interruptions that may arise during the course of performing the essential functions of the position. Must be caring, empathetic and dependable. Must be professional at all times. Must adhere to Federal Privacy Act and comply with Federal HIPPA regulations.

PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional standing/walking while performing office duties: walking short distances performed throughout shift on tile, carpet or concrete. Frequent/constant sitting: on adjustable chair at desk or assigned work area. May stand as desired. Ability to occasionally life 1-20 lbs.: files, paperwork, supplies. Seldom required to lift up to 35 lbs. Occasional required to push/pull using both arms/hands with required force of 5-20 lbs. to open doors/file drawers and filing documents. Seldom required to climb: stairs at some locations. Frequently required to bend at waist/knees/neck to and from seated position while working at desk, filing and records handling. Not unusually required to kneel, crouch or crawl: may kneel or crouch occasionally to retrieve items from floor level. Constant use of both hands/fingers and arms to reach/handle or grasp while keyboarding, using phone, calculator, copier, and other office equipment; writing instructions, filing and performing other administrative duties. Job requirements include forward and over shoulder reaching on a frequent basis. Keyboarding ? frequently for short intervals throughout work shift depending on specific work requirements. Ability to use computers, reading fine print, interacting with the public and co-workers; visual requirements include hand/eye coordination and visual acuity in near/mid ranges. Ability to constantly answer phones, communicate with clients, patients and, co-workers while giving and receiving instructions. Work is performed indoors in a climate controlled office environment.
