Conference Description With current estimates that over 30% of children struggle with anxiety, it is virtually impossible to work in any healthcare setting and not have anxious families show up, desperate for help. As we move through 2021, the demand for skill and knowledge will only increase; to manage this, providers should be using the most effective, creative, and active strategies. The key to success, ever more apparent to me after working with thousands of families, is providing a clear plan for HOW to respond when anxiety shows up. We also know that anxiety runs strongly in families and that parent coaching is instrumental to successful treatment.

This workshop will focus on the skills families need: moving families immediately into action, creating homework assignments for families, upping your use of "relaxation" strategies, and anxiety's connection to depression, self-harm, trauma, and social issues.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss important elements of provider self-care and include them in daily routines. 2. Review how to coach parents and caretakers to interrupt their own patterns of anxious parenting to decrease the modeling of family anxiety. 3. Discuss the difference between content-based and process-based interventions as it relates to treatment of anxiety in families. 4. Explain to families how the worry and anxiety process works in the brain and body to maximize effectiveness of psycho-education. 5. Outline active assignments for families that correct the common traps that bolster both anxiety and depression.

Presenter Lynn Lyons, LICSW is an internationally recognized psychotherapist, author, and speaker with a special interest in interrupting the generational patterns of anxiety in families.

She is the author of several books and articles, including (with Reid Wilson) Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and the companion book for kids Playing with Anxiety: Casey's Guide for Teens and Kids. She is the co-host of the popular podcast Flusterclux and has several online programs for professionals, parents, and children.

She maintains a private practice in Concord, New Hampshire where she sees families whenever she's not on the road teaching.

Community Presentation Lynn Lyons, LICSW, will be presenting "NOW What? Helping Children (and Parents) Manage Emotionally during Uncertain Times" at a live virtual educational activity open to the community the evening of Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 6:30 p.m. ? 8:00 p.m. (central time). The link to this virtual event will be emailed to you prior to June 23, 2021.

Children and teens were struggling with increasing rates of anxiety and depression prior to 2020, and this past year did not help. Parents and caregivers need strategies to help children (and themselves!) manage the uncertainty of our

current environment as we recover and move forward. This presentation describes the skills needed for emotional management including how to increase flexibility, tolerate uncertainty, communicate effectively and replace catastrophic thinking with problem solving. I will refer to situations particular to the pandemic and its aftermath, but recommended measures will be relevant far beyond this timeframe as we look toward prevention.
