Intro: Part of the new survey process involves creating diagrams on the computer rather than drawing them freehand. This "How To" will take you through the basic steps and tools needed to create simple diagrams using Microsoft Paint. There are many other free and low cost tools available as well that you are free to use, however we feel Paint is the most user friendly and widespread. There are also many other tutorials available on the web as well as the Help that is provided with Microsoft Paint.

Step 1: Open Microsoft Paint by going to "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Paint".

Step 2: Below are the main tools of Paint that you will need to help you create diagrams. If you need to make the white canvas larger, click and drag on the bottom corner of the white canvas.

Step 3: Drawing A Square/Rectangle ? Click on the Rectangle Tool on the left. Simply left-click and drag to create the rectangle of your choice.

Step 4: Using the Line Tool ? If you need to draw a building that is not square, your best bet will be to user the Line Tool. Select the Line Tool at the left, left-click and drag to create a line. Release the mouse button will finish the line. You can then left-click again to start a new line.

Step 5: Adding Labels ? If you need to add text to the diagram for square footage or building descriptions click on the Text Tool on the left. Left-click on the canvas where you want to type the label. If you need to change the font size or type you can use the Font Toolbar. If you need to change the size of the label you can left-click and drag the edges of the label.
