ADJUST INDIRECT FIRE - United States Army
Adjust Indirect Fire
061-283-6003
Conditions: Given a Signal Operating Instructions (SOI), a compass, a map of the area with your location, a radio, writing instruments, and a field artillery support unit.
Standards: Determine the target location within 250 meters of the actual location. The initial call for fire must be made within three minutes after target has been identified. Adjustments must be sent within 45 seconds after each round impacts. Observer must enter the fire-for-effect phase using no more than six rounds in adjustment. Fire-for-effect must be within 50 meters of the target.
Training and Evaluation
Performance Steps:
1. Locate the target within 250 meters of the actual target location.
2. Formulate a Call for Fire.
a. Conduct three transmissions (elements of the call for fire).
(1) Observer identification and warning order. Example: H24, this is N59, fire for effect, over.
(2) Target location. Example: Grid NF506394, over.
(3) Target description, method of engagement, method of fire and control. Example: Tank in the open, ICM in effect, over.
b. Give the six-digit grid with the grid zone identifier of the location of the target within 250 meters of the targets actual location.
c. Give the direction to the target within 100 mils (M2 compass) or five degrees (lensetic compass) or give an accurate cardinal direction (no compass available) of the targets actual location.
d. Give an accurate target description.
e. Complete the call for fire within three minutes of identification of the target.
3. Determine corrections.
a. Make all corrections during the adjust phase within 45 seconds of the round impacting.
b. Use no more than six rounds during the adjusting phase.
c. The fire for effect must be within 50 meters of the target.
d. Determine the correct observer to target (OT) factor to be used.
4. Give an end of mission brief.
a. Determine the effects on the target.
b. Give a brief description of what happened to the target. Example: EOM, target destroyed, estimate two causalities, over.
Performance Evaluation Guide
Evaluation Preparation: Ensure that a target is readily identifiable to the soldier and the equipment listed in the conditions is present and operational. The evaluator must know the grid location, direction, and distance to the target that will be used.
Brief Soldier: Identify the target to the soldier. The target location must be within 250 meters of the actual target location. Tell the soldier he or she must enter the fire for effect phase using no more than six rounds in adjustment (initial round plus five). The fire for effect must be within 50 meters of the target. The initial call for fire must be made within three minutes after the target has been identified. Adjustments must be sent within 45 seconds after round impacts.
|Performance Measures |Results |
|1. Locate the target within 250 meters of the actual target location. |GO / NO-GO |
|2. Formulate a call for fire. |GO / NO-GO |
|3. Determine corrections. |GO / NO-GO |
|4. Give an end of mission brief. |GO / NO-GO |
Evaluation Guidance: Score the soldier GO if all performance measures are passed. Score the soldier NO-GO if any performance measure is failed. If the soldier scores NO-GO, show the soldier what was done wrong and how to do it correctly.
