From the desk of... Rich Cohen, B'nai Aviv President

On a recent business trip to New York, I walked by the Majestic Theatre and saw Phantom of the Opera was still playing-in fact, it is the longest running Broadway show that opened in 1988 with over 13,000 performances. The same show, with the same script but it continues to attract new and repeat attendees. Then I realized, B'nai Aviv has something in common with this iconic show-we have been running for 30 years as well!

An analogy between a synagogue and a long running Broadway show may be weak, but in many ways we are the same. Our script of spirituality, community and caring has not changed in our 30 years, even while our spiritual leaders and members have changed and rotated through our doors. We are consistent in our script of Jewish prayer, but each time you attend a service, there is new meaning and opportunity to be found. A glance at the translation of a prayer that you recite by rote memory, the study of the weekly Torah portion or simply saying hello to someone you regularly see but do not really know, are all opportunities to help you to keep finding value and meaning in being part of our community.

As President of our synagogue, I get a unique view of these opportunities being seized and absorbed by our Members. I see the kvelling of parents and Grandparents at a B'nai Mitzvah, I marvel at our young people reading Torah and providing inspiration and insightful D'var Torah talks, I get energized by our ECEC Friday Shabbat services, our Hazak programs, our Sisterhood and Men's Club offerings, our Youth programs and our community pulling together to support a fellow congregant in need. The script never gets old and the enjoyment never ends-it really is a special place to be.

I ask each of you to join me in finding additional meaning in your synagogue membership. Together we will continue to enhance the experience for our current members and attract new members. Our 30 year run is just the beginning of our journey together as a community and we must work together to ensure that we never lower our curtain for the final time. You Belong Here!

B'shalom,

Rich

B'nai Aviv Gala 2019

Our Newsletter article had to be written and turned in by the middle of February, but you will be reading it after the Gala has taken place. Therefore, we are just taking a wild guess that it will be safe to say........ this Gala was spectacular! Celebrating our four honoree couples, Debbie and Benny Bejar, Ellen and Shelly Evans, Beth and Allen Katz and Bonnie and John Salmon, along with the 30th Anniversary of B'nai Aviv was a sure winner. We will have photos to share with you for the April Newsletter, but we can say with certainty that the decorations were beautiful, the food was fantastic and the music motivated everyone to dance and have a wonderful time.

We must thank the Gala Committee and other people who had a hand in making this a most memorable evening for everyone:
