The Facts of Life could have been a paint-by-numbers setup for a network sitcom, but it was groundbreaking in many ways. While not the first TV show to focuses on female protagonists, many coming of age series focused on girls and women through the men's eyes in their life. The Facts of Life was different. Now, many are trying to look back at the series on streaming. That task, however, might take some effort. You take the good; you take the bad... According to IMDB, The Facts of Life was a Diff'rent Strokes spinoff featuring Edna Garrett, played by the late Charlotte Rae, as she opened up a boarding school for girls. Joined by actresses Natalie Cohn, Kim Fields, Lisa Whelchel, and from season two on, Nancy McKeon. On top of this, everyone from Molly Ringwald to George Clooney graced the series in regular roles before their big break. The show took on a few different forms. It started with the bulk of its main cast being young teenage girls and ended as they entered into the scary world of adulthood. While family-friendly, it dove into issues such as sex, sexism, and other topics that other series in the Living up to your dreams Tom Fitzsimmons as Alex Garrett, Charlotte Rae as Mrs. Edna Ann Garrett | Ron Tom/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the show's history, the cast reunited for an oral history. During it, they dished on the show's penchant for hitting taboo topics while remaining family-friendly and the impact that the female-centric show had on its audience, young and old. Rae, who passed away in 2018, beamed about how fans approached her on the street to thank her. "People still come up and tell me how much Mrs. Garrett and the girls meant to them when they were growing up," she told the magazine. "And some people who really didn't have much of a family life will tell me that it felt like I was their mother, because of the warmth of Mrs. Garrett. Knowing that I was doing a service to some children who were in need, that I was there for them with what they felt was an unconditional love, that makes me so happy." According to Lisa Whelchel, who played Blair on the show, the impact that it had took many years to hit her. However, once it did, she realized why she was such a role model to a generation of eighties girls. "In the middle of doing the series, being young, I don't think I had the kind of perspective to realize or appreciate what kind of an impact it was having," she told the magazine. "But with age and time and now having that perspective from meeting women who watched the show when they were younger, it's made me so incredibly grateful to have been a part of something that's been able to bring so much joy to so many people." Despite its special place in so many lives, however, The Facts of Life is not easy to find on the usual streaming services. Where can I watch it? RELATED: `The Facts of Life': Mindy Cohn's Role Was Created Just For Her Those who are looking to stream the entire series will have to open their wallets to do so.], The Facts of Life is not streaming in its entirety on any of the major platforms. Some of the episodes are streaming on Pluto, the ad-supported online service specializing in nostalgic content such as this. Otherwise, it's streaming on Amazon and several other services for purchase. The Facts of Life is one of the most groundbreaking television series in history. There's a reason that nearly 40 years after its premiere, it remains in the cultural lexicon. While one might expect this to lead to Netflix and other popular services, it hasn't happened yet. Luckily, they remain in heavy rotation on home media, syndication, and other places that nostalgic television such as this can thrive. A couple of days in Iceland notwithstanding, "Journey" was mainly shot indoors on soundstages in Montreal, "so we were spared the weather issues," notes Brevig, who still had to work out how to build 40 sets on four stages, "knowing that we can't film and build on the same set at the same time. How do you change the lighting from an orange-lit desert to the blues and greens of the waterfall set without holding up the set builders below?" The solution? A pre-set lighting grid on a dimmer board that could be changed with the push of a button. "It probably saved us two weeks' production time."Since big action set pieces are time-consuming to shoot, even with animatic blueprints as guidelines, Brevig "had two 3-D rigs so we would shoot two shots at a time, giving me more editorial coverage and a faster pace. I made a still frame grab of every shot and put them up on boards on the set in shooting order. We'd take them off one by one as we shot the sequences," he details. His team had only one night to shoot an underwater sequence at the Olympic Stadium pool in Montreal, so "safety divers getting in the shot" were the least of his worries. But advance planning on the lighting end and not having to reload the digital camera allowed him to finish in seven hours.Several physically demanding scenes involved suspending actors in midair in harnesses while they delivered dialogue. They were shot against a blue screen for part of the free-fall to the center of the earth, except for the portion where the camera is looking up at them. "We put the actors on their sides and we'd dolly past them with the camera on its side," Brevig explains. He used a similar low-tech method for the waterfall scene, placing the stars on a 50-foot table covered in black plastic. "We went out in the parking lot at night, aimed fire hoses up the table and dragged the actors by wires on their feet. We put the camera on its side so it looks like it's vertical."Josh Hutcherson enjoyed doing "as much as they'd let me do" stunt-wise, including rock climbing and the sequence where he shoots into the air on a giant kite. He was spared injuries, but Fraser incurred several, including a burned hand from getting too close to an exploding magnesium flare."That was day three of shooting and we had to shut down for two days. Not that I wished it on him, but it allowed me 36 hours to go to Iceland and scout locations," notes Brevig, adding that Fraser hurt his back later on. "He was on a big rig and a got smacked in the tailbone. He took the brunt of the injuries, but everyone got scrapes and bruises from brushing against concrete and plaster."Such SNAFUs aside, "Journey" came in well under its $70 million budget, according to Brevig, who'd happily direct a sequel -- mention of the search for the lost city of Atlantis was included precisely for that reason, he says. "I'd do it in a heartbeat," Hutcherson concurs. For more information on this movie, 3-D formats and related topics, journey over to the next page. Sharing your story with others can help you feel less alone. Here's why.1. You can find (and give) support. Opening up to others on social media can have many benefits, says Dana Lukin, MD, a gastroenterologist at Weill Cornell Medicine, in New York City. "One of the biggest advantages is the identification of patient advocates and physicians on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook."When Raina O'Dell, a health and fitness coach and mother of two, was diagnosed with UC in March 2016, she didn't know anything about -- or anyone dealing with -- the autoimmune disease. But when she began sharing her personal journey, she was amazed at the outpouring of support that she received. "It really tugged on my heartstrings," she says. Similarly, she's also able to be a source of encouragement for other people who are dealing with the disease; O'Dell's Instagram account (@rainavsfood) has more than 72,000 followers."I've actually been shocked at the response I've gotten by being so open about my illness," she explains. "I've had people reach out and open up, sharing their own struggles, asking for advice, and just being an ear for people who really don't have anyone else that can relate."2. You can share advice and tips with others.Through lots of research (and some trial and error), Long eventually found a diet that worked for her. Now she's hoping to teach her hard-won lessons to others. First on her list is helping people find ways to work vegetables into their diet."So many people think that with UC you don't have to eat veggies," she says. "That is so not true!"3. You have an opportunity to raise awareness about the condition."General knowledge and awareness about ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease ... is very lacking," says blogger Rhian Williams, whose Instagram account (@rhiansrecipes) following is upward of 36,000. (Her blog, Rhian's Recipes, also features hundreds of UC-friendly recipes.) "So I felt that if I were able to raise even just a small amount of awareness about it, it could only be a good thing.""An additional benefit of social media is the involvement of the major GI societies," says Dr. Lukin, including the American College of Gastroenterology (@AmCollegeGastro), American Gastroenterological Association (@AmerGastroAssn), and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (@CrohnsColitisFn).As for Long, she says that her role as a social media influencer is to spread awareness to not only those who have UC but also those who do not. "My biggest responsibility is to educate others and help them improve their health," she says. The Cons of Sharing Your UC Journey OnlineNot everyone is positive and cheerful on social media, and if you open up to others, you might experience negativity.1. You might receive some unwanted (and unsolicited) advice."If you're open and vulnerable, there will be people who hate," says O'Dell. "I've been told to eat a cheeseburger more times than I can count and that I `looked better before.'" Still, when the negativity gets to her, she focuses on all the positive support she's received in the past. "That makes those one or two negative comments a lot easier to deal with," she says.Other people, says Lukin, may not be reputable sources of information. "While much of the information available on social medial is positive," he says, "patients should be cautioned that there is also a lot of misinformation, pseudoscience, and individuals aiming to profit off of products that are recommended."2. You may feel scared at first."I was really nervous about opening up at first," says Williams, "because I'm naturally quite a private person, and it's always daunting to share something so personal about yourself with complete strangers."But after speaking up about her condition, Williams says she was able to overcome her fear and now feels empowered.3. Yes, you'll probably feel embarrassed. Not everyone feels comfortable talking about their bodies, so talking about your gastrointestinal condition may seem especially daunting. "It's not something you want to share," admits Long. "You can't control your bowels. Nobody wants to talk about that! You're throwing your story out there, and it's subject to scrutiny. And it may be something that nobody -- your coworkers, your friends, your neighbors -- knows you're dealing with, and now they do. That's hard."All caveats aside, Lukin thinks social media can be a good thing for people with ulcerative colitis. "I believe it's a fantastic way to learn, network, and develop a virtual support system," he says.
