I hope everyone enjoyed some rest over the summer and is eager, excited, and ready to begin the new school year. We are off to a great start this school year and are enthusiastically awaiting the return of our students. The Richey faculty & staff are dedicated and passionate about student learning! Therefore, we are excited to continue positively impacting student learning and growth. Thanks to the hard work of our teachers, our students, and you, Richey Elementary earned an Accountability Rating of Met Standard as reported by TEA’s accountability system. Our accomplishments are a direct result of our students, teachers, and community’s daily contributions and dedication. This year we will continue to improve by focusing on learning, meeting all student’s needs, and building a school culture of collaboration, positive energy, and high expectations from all stakeholders.? I would like to thank you in advance for your support and efforts to work collaboratively in order for our students to be successful. Our parents are important members of the Richey school family. We love your children and appreciate your parental involvement. I am honored and privileged to continue to serve our community as Richey’s school principal.? As we continue this year, I want to take a moment to remind you of a few familiar and new items: First Week of School:? Parents may walk their children to class on the first day of school. We ask that after the first day of school all students report to their class on their own except newly enrolled students. Personnel on duty will assist students in the morning upon arrival.?Arrival:??? Car riders PK-4 and Day Care buses will enter off of Thomas St. Students exit their cars once they pull up to a staff member at a cone. Students will enter the door close to the gym beginning at 7:10 a.m. Parents that do not follow the rules and drop their students off at other locations other than the car rider line will be placing their students in danger.Walkers will walk on the middle sidewalk (by the bicycle ramps) along to the left under the canopy until they reach the door close to the gym to enter the building. Walkers may not walk through the parking lots on the Richey side or Thomas St. PPCD and Success bus riders and car riders will be dropped off at the back of the school (Hamilton St.). Parents and buses will circle around the cul-de-sac to drop off the students. Buses and vehicles are not allowed past the gates.Dismissal:Walk alone students (K-4th) will be released by grade level including younger siblings with older siblings. School personnel will escort the students out the front doors and down the middle sidewalk to the crosswalk on Richey St. or Thomas St. Parents will receive their students after they are crossed by the crossing guard or school personnel. It is the responsibility of the parent to be at the crosswalk if they wish to walk home with their child. Students that have parent permission to walk home alone will not be brought back to campus.? Car riders K-4 will enter off of Thomas St. Students will be released through the gym and assigned to a cone once their name is called. Please display the car tag sign(s) on your windshield. Younger siblings will meet their older siblings in the gym.? Parents are not allowed to park for any reason in the parking lot of off Thomas St. during arrival and dismissal. It is imperative that parents wait patiently in the car rider line. In order for staff to call out students quickly they will need to be able to view all dismissal tags displayed on dashboards. Please make sure your car tag remains visible until your child is picked up. Parents will be issued one car tag per child at the beginning of the year. This is our initial verification of responsible parties of car riders therefore; parents will be liable if they share the car tag with other individuals. The traffic will flow one way in and one way out on Thomas St. during arrival and dismissal. Cars traveling from Richey St. will make a right turn only onto Thomas St. to pick up their children and then make a right turn only to exit onto Thomas St. In order to expedite student arrival and dismissal, we ask, that we utilize our stacking lane effectively.? This means, all vehicles need to move up as close as possible to the school, before stopping to drop off students.? Please do not park on Thomas St. for any reason during arrival and dismissal times. Traffic flow on Thomas St. is strictly for parents picking up their children by car. In addition, cars are not permitted to enter the parking lot off Richey St. to drop off or pick up students before or after school. PPCD, Success, Pre-K, and Day Care (bus riders and car riders) will be picked up at the back of the school (Hamilton St.). Parents and buses will circle around the cul-de-sac to pick up the students. Buses and vehicles are not allowed past the gates. Pre-K-1st grade students will be allowed to walk with parents this school year. Walk with parents will line up under the canopy in front of the office area. Please be patient and courteous to one another as you wait. Please be aware that you may be asked to present your I.D. along with your dismissal tag if it is the first time you pick up a student. Students will be released through the door at the side of the building closest to Richey Street. Parents will not enter the building to receive their child, they will wrap back around under the canopy and continue to walk using the middle sidewalk by the bike racks. Please notify your child’s teacher if you have a special circumstance that would require a student in 2nd- 4th grade to be a walk with parent. Written requests must be submitted to teachers to be considered for approval by administration. Walk with parent is a privilege therefore, if we have parents that are late 3 or more times or pick up their child in a car they will be dismissed from walk with parent.?The parking lot off of Richey will only be used at arrival and dismissal for individuals that need to park and take care of items in the front office (please refer to parent letter dated 8/16/19). Walk with parents are not allowed to park in this parking lot. If a student is being picked up by a parent driving they are considered a car rider and not walk with parent. Students may not be released to parents through the front office once we begin our dismissal process. However, if a parent needs to pick up a child early due to an emergency or appointment they may do so no later than 2:45 p.m. Please plan accordingly to ensure that your child is picked up by 3:05 p.m. Students that remain on campus at the conclusion of our dismissal process will be considered late pick-ups. Students who are consistently picked up late may be referred to the appropriate authorities.? We will continue to reinforce the following Student Handbook and Code of Conduct district policies: For the protection of your child, the school cannot release students to leave earlier than the regular dismissal time unless the parent sent written permission to secure a release for the child. The person must be at least 18 years old.Parents or other responsible parties that are listed on the registration or emergency cards must present proper identification when picking up a student (e.g. Texas Driver’s License, Texas I.D. Card). If the parent authorizes someone else to pick up the child, the authorization must be in writing, signed and dated, and confirmed by school personnel before the child may be released. If any arrangement differs from the normal way a student is to go home, a note must be written or faxed to the office that morning. All notes are subject to verification. Otherwise, the students will be sent home the usual way.? Please visit the school if you wish to make any changes related to transportation and/or student enrollment card contact information.? We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and cooperation during our daily arrival and dismissal process. We will be able to make this process a success by working together. Please help us model responsibility, respect, and speaking positively during daily arrival and dismissal routines. Together we will ensure the safety of all Richey students during arrival and dismissal time.? Dress Code: Please visit our website for the current dress code policy.? Please note that students are required to use a clear or mesh backpack. Breakfast will be served from 7:10 a.m. – 7:35 a.m. Please make sure your student arrives early so they receive ample time to enjoy their breakfast. School Hours:? 7:45 a.m. – 3:05 p.m. -- The tardy bell will ring at 7:45 a.m.? Please make every effort to have your child at school on time so they will not miss instruction. Students who are tardy to school will need to be escorted in the front office by a parent. The school office hours are 7:15 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. We will continue to implement a lunch schedule that allows parents to visit their child at lunch once a month (second week of the month). You must bring a valid ID and sign in at the front office. Parents will sit at a designated area with their child. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns and availability of space we are unable to allow additional visits and additional family members. The lunch schedule is attached below. It is based on your child’s grade level. Parents of students in the SUCCESS program may visit their child at lunch according to their assigned grade level. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support in ensuring that the cafeteria promotes a safe environmentMonday PPCD Pre K and KinderTuesday1st GradeWednesday2nd GradeThursday3rd GradeFriday4th GradeStudents will bring home a Tuesday folder. This folder will include their weekly conduct grade; papers that they have worked on that can remain at home, and papers that should be signed and returned to school. We ask that parents look at the folder every Tuesday, review the conduct grade and papers with their child, sign the conduct folder, and return the folder to school the next day. It is our hope that with diligence on the part of the school and the parents, the Tuesday folder will provide weekly communication between the home and the school. Report Card Conferences will be held this year each nine weeks as requested and scheduled through the homeroom teacher. At the first nine week grading period all parents will be invited to conference with their child’s teacher in order to receive their report card. At the second and third nine week reporting periods parents will be invited for a conference depending on their child’s progress. We look forward to your participation and involvement in this process this school year. Please feel free to call the school office at (713) 740-0712 if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks so much for all your help and support! The 2019-2020 school year is going to be TERRIFIC! Sincerely, Andrea M. Zapata Principal ................
