WINTER 2012 A Quarterly Update for Dues-paying Members of The UM Alumni Association

Griz-Cat Satellite Parties

One year after a disappointing loss to MSU in the annual cross-state college football game, the Montana Grizzlies took their revenge on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Bozeman as they dominated the Bobcats with a 36-10 win in the 111th Brawl of the Wild. Fallen Soldier Memorial unveiled during military reunion

Crews prepare the site on Memorial Row for the installation of the Fallen Soldier Memorial.

Members of The University of Montana ROTC unveil the memorial in front of a crowd of hundreds of people on the evening of Nov. 4.

A field-size American flag is unfurled across Washington-Grizzly Stadium prior to kickoff at the Nov. 5 game.

The University of Montana

hosted its first military reunion

in a three-day event marked

by tears, laughter and solemn

remembrance for those who

gave their lives in service to

their country.

About 80 UM alumni

veterans with graduation dates

ranging from 1950 to 2006

attended the reunion, which

was held Nov. 3-6.

the Fallen Soldier Memorial, a

monument honoring the 40 Montana service people who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A product of the collaboration between Lincoln artist Rick Rowley and the Conrad-based

organization Grateful Nation Montana, the memorial also symbolizes Grateful Nation's

commitment to providing college scholarships and mentoring to all children of fallen

Montana soldiers. The memorial is located on UM's Memorial Row, amid the ponderosa

pines the university planted in 1919 to honor alumni and friends who gave their lives in

World War I.

The emotional dedication ceremony included remarks from 1996 UM graduate

and Grateful Nation Montana founder David Bell, UM President Royce Engstrom,

President Emeritus George Dennison, Brig. Gen. Matt Quinn and U.S. Sen. Max

Baucus. Hundreds of people -- including generations of veterans and Gold Star families --

surrounded the memorial as it was uncovered.

Following Friday's unveiling ceremony, Montana veterans were recognized for their

service during Military Appreciation Day at Saturday's Griz football game. Spectators stood

in awe as more than 300 military personnel and family members spread a field-size American

flag across Washington Grizzly Stadium and a pair of F-15 fighter jets passed overhead

minutes before kickoff.

The reunion weekend also gave alumni veterans a chance to reconnect with each other,

the University and the city of Missoula as they participated in tours of local historical sites

and attended a special barbecue and tailgate party prior to Saturday's game.

UM hopes to make the military reunion a regular event. The Office of Alumni Relations

will continue its effort to identify UM veterans with its online survey, which can be found at
