Podcasting & NDNz :
A 2 way Open Channel of INFO...
In 2007, the majority of Native American people in the U.S. are not online, nor do they have access to Internet, media technologies, "state of the Art" or "cutting edge" developments in these fields. Though many have heard of iPods, how many have one?
Furthermore, how many Native people have heard of podcasts and have any idea what they are? Nonetheless, the iPod, Podcasting and other Web 2.0 technologies currently emerging online, such as WeBlogs, MySpace and YouTube, may very well be a point of synchronicity for Native people to adapt these technologies to our own unique applications.
For example, in this video (on YouTube) linked below, David Campbell, An Arawak from Guyana So. America shares his perspective:
Thatched Roof To YouTube
In the second video (on Google) linked here, folks at UMASS have recovered and made available a valuable piece of historical footage of the modern day Native experience.
A Conversation with Phillip Deere, Muskogee-Creek Elder
Although currently, Native videos online are growing daily, there are less then a dozen quality Native American Podcasts, or Podcasters. It is hoped that as we began to discover this new technology, we come to realize that the potential of applications for Native communities is unlimited.
Whether in the preservation of Native languages, the education of Native Youth & communities about Hazards of Meth and Gangs, or just keeping the communities in touch, Podcasting, with it's ease of production and affordability could undoubtedly become a valuable communications medium for Native people.
In the interest of helping this along, this information bulletin explores the development of portable media and podcasting, as well as identifying some Native Podcasts online. In future bulletins we'll explore what it takes to produce a Podcast and put it online.
The Portable Media Revolution!
It started in the Summer of 1979 with the Walkman and later in 1984 with the Walkman CD player and recorded CDs of our favorite artists, which we could take with us, beyond the home or car to listen to while we ran, hiked or simply watched the day go by. It grew when recordable CDs became available and we could then create our own portable media to play on our portable CD players.
Then came MP3 (November 26, 1996 - United States patent issued for MP3 & 1999 - Portable MP3 players appear) and iPod (Oct. 2001).
Although MP3 has been around for awhile, (comparatively speaking) until recently it was the exclusive domain of musicians and producers of audio content. With the arrival of iPod, MP3 technology has been opened to everybody and anybody with the computer, some hardware, software and the interest to dabble.
In fact, not long ago, one had to purchase audio editing software to encode audio files to MP3, yet today we can download open source audio editor software and the MP3 encoder online for free.

Naturally, being the humans we are, and given this new found access we evolved the next step in portable media technology by creating "Podcasting" (Summer 2004 subsequent to surge in iPod sales from Summer 03 through to Dec 04).
Not Just for music...
Like the walkman and recorded CDs, the Ipod & MP3 technology arose out of the marriage between musician and audience. Then, just as folks began to record their own CD-Rs for their CD players, some soon developed the way and means to not only record their own MP3 files to listen to on their MP3 players but also to share with others.
It was the files sharing controversy with Napster (1998) that catylized the revolution of MP3 file sharing, laying the groundwork for podcast development. All these things came together and merged with the online phenomenon of Blogging, and Podcasting was born.
Some people describe Podcasting as portable radio, in that the content of podcasts is not limited to MP3 music related content.
Radio broadcasters have begun to incorporate podcasts into their program offerings, yet a variety of other people have also begun to dabble in the art.
Arts, Commentary, News, Education and Entertainment can all be found alongside music programming in audio and video podcasts. Better yet, many of these podcasts can be viewed, listened to or downloaded for free.
Podcasts are not limited to the major news networks or PBS podcasters, the numbers of independent podcasters producing a variety of content is growing every day.
Everyone from poets to artists, small businesses (as well as large) to non- profit organizations are exploring the rapidly evolving realm of podcasting.
Several colleges and universities have established podcasts in conjunction with their academic programs, as well as individual scholars.
EMS and Disaster Readiness groups have adopted the technology to get their message out.
What Is A Podcast?
Podcasting History
"Podcasting was developed in 2004 by former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer. Curry wrote a program, called iPodder, that enabled him to automatically download Internet radio broadcasts to his iPod. Several developers improved upon his idea, and podcasting was officially born."

Podcatching Podcasts from Podcasters...
One of the main elements of podcasts that people really enjoy, as well as the ability to download media and enjoy it at your convenience, is the ability to subscribe to podcasts and thereby have the information sent to them, rather then have to go to get it.
Similar to the way blogs operate, this happens through what is called RSS, or Really Simple Syndication (among many popular interpretations).
In addition to having the media sent to you through your subscription it is also possible to download podcasts to your MP3 players, as well as your computer, and to hear it at your convenience.
The software that makes this happen is formely called an Aggregator, and popularly referred to as a Podcatcher.
With Podcatcher software, you can subscribe to Podcasts, get updated media feeds as they are available, synchronize with your MP3 player and download into that or enjoy them on your computer in commonly available, (and free) media players.
How To Add A Podcast To Your Podcatcher
However, as I'll explain below, you really "Don't Need No MP3 player!" to enjoy podcasts or MP3 media.
U don't need No IPOD!
and...you don't even need to be online!
Like the Free media players, Windows Media Player, Real Player and QuickTime, Podcast aggregators are pretty easy to use.
Some require you to download software, however, with online media playback and media download capability provided by some, it may not be necessary to do so if you choose not to.
However, that may also have its' limitations on access to some podcasts or media.
"Apple’s decision, in June 2005, to support podcasts in iTunes"
"The magic of simply attaching an iPod -- of which there have been nearly 70 million sold -- to a PC and having it automatically update your subscriptions has made podcasting much more easily adopted."

Where can you find Podcasts?
The number of podcast directories is growing along with the volume of podcasts and podcasters. An online search for "Podcast Directories" will yield many to explore. A few examples are;

Who Are Podcasters?
As mentioned above, podcasts are being produced and distributed on a wide variety of topics and content, including audio and video media. The people producing these podcasts range from those who do so on a shoestring budget to some who pull all the stops.
Some people produce podcasts as a hobby in their spare time, while others have taken it to the professional level, producing podcasts for businesses, organizations or agencies.
Over the brief period of podcastings' growth, several initiatives have arisen to meet the increasing interest in the medium. Online several groups of podcast enthusiasts have developed reservoirs of resources on information regarding podcasting.
Many of these have conducted gatherings for information sharing as well as socializing among them. One of these events was the first annual Portable Media Expo in 2005.

Yet, not all of the vast array of MP3 files available online for download are in the form of podcasts. Or in some cases, all the MP3 files available online are not available through subscription, or vica versa.
So, in these cases, Right CLICK may be your only option to dowwnload and enjoy them at your convenience offline. With Itunes, I can drag and drop these downloaded MP3 files into the Itunes Library and download them to an Ipod, if I still had one.
Also, MP3 audio files will also play in Windows Media Player, generally by default,
Pass It On!
Coming full circle to the audio CD technology that started this portable media revolution, we can also Burn MP3 media files we've downloaded, to CD-R and give them to some one who doesn't have it, but would like to.
All you need is CD Burner hardware and software, which is pretty affordable these days if you don't already have it.
Log The Divide!
In this Information Age of technology it's easy to feel overwhelmed by it at times. However, if we understand it better we can integrate it into uses we find beneficial to us.
Podcasting and MP3 technology, along with CD-R technology is an excellent example of how a variety of people from diverse backgrounds and with equally diverse interests have done this.
So, if you want to know more about the world around you, a particular subject or interest, or if you'd like to help others learn more similarly, the resources of podcasting are just a few CLICKS away.

The podcasts listed below are the best of the current Native American podcasts produced by Native American podcasters, and although there are a few others out there, we felt those below best represented Native Americans today.

OR...online MP3 DOWNLOADS...just Right CLICK!
A particularly valuable trend of MP3 technology and podcasts online, in my eyes as an educator, is that we can either CLICK on the MP3 link to play it online, or Right CLICK the link to download it to our computer to listen to or view at our convenience.
This eliminates the need for an aggregator, or podcatcher. However, along with many podcatcher/players we can synch with our MP3 player, download the media to it and play it on the go. Freeing us from the Internet and even from the computer.
If you already know how to download MP3 files, you might pass this brief diversion and read on. However, if you don't, then follow this link to learn how;
How To Download!
After you've downloaded the file(s) simply go to and open the folder you saved it to and Click on it to play it, after you are offline or whenever you're ready. Of course if you use an aggregator like Itunes to catch the podcast, it will by subscription, download the MP3 podcast file into your computer and you don't have to worry about any of the above.
