2017-2018 SEASON
Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations, and vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach Revival he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.

LINN WEEDA
A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Alaska Youth Orchestra's second concert of the 2017-2018 season. Our concert tonight is filled with bright and wonderful music ? some gems of the orchestral literature, and one or two items not often heard in classical concerts. And of course, we are showcasing the winner to AYO's concerto competition, Claire Mahoney, who will perform a movement of Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2. We couldn't be prouder! We have a new and energetic Executive Director, Denise Brown-Chythlook. She is the long time owner of a piano studio, has worked in counseling, as well as work in communications. Welcome her if you have a chance-we are all very excited to be working with her! This concert is dedicated to the memory of a long time coach, wonderful trombonist, and inspiring teacher. Dr. Christopher Sweeney passed away in November after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was deeply committed to the Youth Symphony, occasionally performing with us and touring with us in Europe. You can read his biography elsewhere in the program. I know that you will enjoy the music on today's concert, performed by some of Alaska's best young musicians!

DENISE BROWN-CHYTHLOOK
A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Good evening! Thank you for joining us at our second concert of the season. I am honored to join the staff of Alaska Youth Orchestras (AYO) as Executive Director. As a lifelong musician and entrepreneur, I can't imagine a better job! I have the privilege of supporting our talented members and their dedicated families, fulfilling the vision of a committed and hard working board of directors, and working alongside the musical inspiration of Mr. Linn Weeda, our Music Director.
The young musicians you see on stage tonight are the future of classical music in Alaska! That future is made possible by your generous support and the support of many other individuals and businesses. We encourage you to look through our program carefully, taking note of our advertisers and donors, so you can support them in return.
There are several events coming up in our calendar we'd love for you to attend! Our final concert of the year on May 5, will be an exciting collaboration with the Anchorage Concert Chorus, held in the Atwood Concert Hall. It will feature our annual auction fundraiser along with some truly inspiring musical selections that you won't want to miss!
Just two days later, May 7-8, we will hold auditions for the 2018/19 season. Please spread the word and encourage all the talented young musicians you know between grade 9 and up to age 22 to sign up on our website and participate!
Lastly, we are thrilled to announce we were selected for the 2018 Anchorage Mayor's Charity Ball which will be held October 13, 2018. This exceptional event will allow us an opportunity to fundraise and to educate our city about AYO. Please join us for each of these exciting events!
Thank you for being here tonight and supporting AYO!
