Diabetes holiday campers need respite more than most

The 60 children who spent this week at Diabetes Australia – Vic’s camp need the respite more than most 12–14 year-olds.

These children are only a small snapshot of the 7236 Australian children with type 1 diabetes aged 15 and under.  Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions and is managed with insulin injections several times a day (or an insulin pump is used).

In the past two years since Greenborough teen Patrick was diagnosed with diabetes, he has not only grown quickly in height – but in maturity, managing a lifelong chronic condition.

The 13-year-old Greensborough sporty teen says his life has changed in many ways, like not being able to select food out of the pantry due to his strict glucose monitoring, but “it’s helping my maths to figure out total carb grams,” he says.

DA–Vic’s camps offer education, information and support to promote and empower self-management for people with type 1 diabetes.

Patrick said making new friends with diabetes is a highlight of the camp. He said it is a fantastic feeling, realising he isn’t the odd one out. “We are all the same.”

Determined young Patrick has been able to take diabetes in his stride as an active member of his local club’s football and basketball teams with a Most Valuable Player trophy to boot.

He had the chance to stay active this week with camp activities like horse riding, sailing, rock climbing, flying fox, giant swing and the camp disco.

The camps are fully supervised with approximately 32 volunteers, 13 diabetes nurse educators, an onsite doctor, dietitian and dietitian assistant.

Places on camps are highly sought after with over 200 young people missing out every year. Camps would not be possible without volunteers and donations. More than 60 volunteers and 20 health professionals are donating their time this year. You can volunteer by calling 1300 136 588 and donate online.

Diabetes Australia – Vic is the leading charity and peak consumer body working to reduce the impact of diabetes.
