Background Information About Life Cycle UKLife Cycle UK is an independent organisation and registered charity (1077575) that has been working since 1999 to transform lives through cycling. Why cyclingOur experience is that cycling can be a fantastic agent for positive change: cycling improves physical and mental health, enables people on low incomes to access jobs and services, helps people who are lonely or isolated to engage better with community life and helps young people on their journey to independence. It also promotes stronger communities and sustainable living, as well as delivering wider benefits to the environment. We offer practical help and support to enable people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to cycle. This includes cycle training, maintenance training, supported bike rides; access to affordable refurbished bikes and more. Background to Life Cycle UKWe employ 8 full-time-equivalent staff, have a network of 20 freelance cycle instructors and mechanics; 8 Trustees and over 60 volunteers. We have contracts with the local authority to provide cycle training to encourage more people to cycle. In addition, we have a number of charitable projects such Bike Back our project supporting prisoners to learn mechanical skills and Bike Minded that supports people with mental health issues to improve their mental wellbeing through cycling. There is more information on our website .uk about our work.Bike Back Bristol: one of our bike recycling projectsBike Back Bristol is one of Life Cycle’s innovative bike recycling projects run in partnership with HMP Bristol and funded by the Big Lottery Fund. We collect donations of unwanted bicycles from the public and take them to the prison, where our Workshop Instructor teaches prisoners how to strip down, clean and refit them, giving them a new lease of life. When bikes come out of the workshop they are checked, tweaked and made ready for sale by Life Cycle’s mechanics and our team of volunteers. The refurbished bikes are then sold at affordable prices with the intention of helping local people on low incomes to get a bike and start cycling. As well as reducing the flow of bikes to landfill, and giving new life to old bikes, the project provides productive employment, training and qualifications for prisoners. All funds raised at bike sales are put directly back into the project.Benefits to the prisonersBy taking part in Bike Back Bristol, prisoners are offered an opportunity to learn new skills, stay motivated and gain confidence:“I knew the basics, from working on my own bike, but I didn’t realise there was so much more to learn. I have learnt masses – and not just about bikes. I have learnt general things about employment, looking after tools, keeping the workshop clean and tidy. I am feeling much more positive now. I’ve got my mind set on other things and I want to try and get a job when I leave.” - Prisoner at HMP Bristol Benefits to the communityMany people would like to cycle but just can’t afford the full cost of a new bike. One aim of the project is to help more people on low incomes to buy a low cost bike. Through our volunteer programme we also help and support people to learn how to fix their bike. The futureBike Back Bristol is currently funded by the Big Lottery Fund until 2017. We envisage that the project will continue beyond current funding, subject to innovation and development to ensure it can be sustained. We have exciting plans to develop new strands of work within the criminal justice system, community pay-back and young people to mention a few. We are small and dynamic team and are looking for someone with drive and ambition who is excited by the potential of Bike Back Bristol and wants to contribute to our success.2.Job description Job title: Bike Back Bristol project assistantJob overviewLife Cycle UK is recruiting for the position of Bike Back Bristol project assistant for its successful Bike Back project.
