NHS & NJHS Selection Procedures - National Honor Society ...

MARIST CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER

OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Before you begin, please read the Eligibility Criteria in entirety. You can find this information at the end of the application. Knowing the criteria in advance will help you make your best application and promote a greater likelihood of acceptance.

Application Directions: Please complete all sections of this application. Use Microsoft Word and type all information, modifying the tables as needed. Save as a PDF and print. Submit a hardcopy to Jerry Ragan in the Counseling Office by 3:00 on October 13. Do not be modest! Include all pertinent information from your high school years only (not middle or elementary school). All information will be used by the Faculty Council to assist with the fair consideration of your candidacy during the selection process.

*It is important to note that NHS is not simply an honor roll, and acceptance into NHS will require regular meeting attendance and service to the school and community above the established Christian Service minimums. Academic eligibility is only part of our criteria, and completion of this form does not guarantee selection. Should you have any questions about this form, please contact advisers Becky Boyd or Jerry Ragan.

NHS Eligibility Requirements

In an effort to be as transparent as possible in our evaluation of all applications, we have provided our criteria. Invitations are based upon meeting the Scholarship and Character traits, and the Faculty Council will use this rubric for evaluating Scholarship, Service, and Leadership.

1. Scholarship: Meets = 3.6 weighted GPA

Exceeds = 3.8 weighted with a challenging program

2. Service: Junior Meets = 10 hours

Junior Exceeds = 15+ hours

Senior Meets = 50 hours

Senior Exceeds = 75+ hours

Students must be in good standing with the Theology Department and Christian Service Experience (CSE) minimums. Students may list other types of service work to enhance the application, but no number of hours will make up for lack of documented service to the marginalized.

3. Leadership: Meets = One bona-fide leadership position (team captain, work area manager, yearbook section editor, etc.)*

Exceeds = Strong level of participation in one position or general participation in more than one leadership position.

Nearly Meets = Everyday forms of leadership, such as leading class discussions or helping other athletes improve their skills after practice.

*We recognize that it is impossible for everyone to have this high level of experience. A student who “Nearly Meets” the standard can reinforce his or her application with a positive reference from a teacher or coach in order to “Meet” in Leadership without a formal title or role.

4. Character: Meets = No major discipline issues or patterns of repetitive minor infractions in the last school year.

Admission: Seniors must meet in all categories.

Juniors must meet in all categories and exceed in at least one.*

* The Faculty Council will use discretion and flexibility in either direction for juniors based on the number and quality of applications in any given year.
