JANUARY 20th Through 22nd, 2006

Winter Snow Wet Socks No Whining Cold Weather Encampment and Second Annual Crispy Nose Hair Deep Freeze

~ ~ ~ W e - d i t a r o d ~ ~ ~

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Salt River District Winter Encampment for 2006. You may be familiar with or at least have heard about the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska every winter. Well, this is our shameless copy of that famous event. Instead of an “I” for Iditarod, we are doing a “We” for a We-ditarod since it will take a patrol to compete in this sled race.

We will use the National Guard facilities at Camp Navajo, West of Flagstaff on route 40 again this year. Directions to the camp are in this packet. The competitive portion of the Camporee is designed to exercise the scouts physically and build team competitive spirit. We will also practice and perfect outdoor cold weather survival skills and, in general, have a bunch of fun !!

We Need Some Troops To Step Up And Sponsor The Events.

Call or E-mail Jim Meister at 602-770-1181 jmeister3@

The encampment is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, January 20th through 22nd, 2006.

Tour Permits are Required ! You must present it at registration.

Time is allocated on Sunday morning for those troops wishing to hold religious services at 9:00 A.M.

THE CAMPOREE FEE WILL BE $3.00 PER PERSON FOR THOSE WHO PRE-REGISTER TO CAMP IN THIS INVIGORATING ARCTIC ENVIRONMENT. Pre-registration helps us out for planning. If you don’t know the complete roster, give us an idea and you will be considered pre-registered for fees. We can adjust the fee amount after you arrive at camp with a good headcount.

RADIO’S, TV’S, CASSETTE OR CD PLAYERS, ELECTRONIC GAMES, AND THE LIKE ARE NOT PERMITTED.

THIS IS A FEDERAL PROPERTY. WE MUST RESPECT IT AND PROTECT THE AREA WHILE WE ARE THERE JUST AS WE WOULD ANY PERSONAL PROPERTY. PLEASE BE A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THE BSA AND LEAVE THE AREA CLEANER THAN YOU FOUND IT.

STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE SCOUT OATH AND LAW WILL BE EXPECTED FOR THE DURATION OF THE ENCAMPMENT.

Due to the outback nature of the campsite areas, no vehicles will be allowed in the campsite. You can drop off gear and park nearby, but out of the general camping area. Plenty of space is available.

Will Salt River Sam be there? You bet and in fine form, cheering on the sled teams as they fly through the countryside white with snow.

CAMP NAVAJO

January 20-22, 2006

REQUIRED PATROL ITEMS

In addition to the items needed for a successful weekend encampment, the following items will be required for the competitive events:

One big positive ‘Let’s Have a Good Time’ attitude per scout

Poles to make a travois or a sled. (Any kind will do, but no saucer or dish type units.)

Pocket Knife (Don’t forget the Totin’ Chip)

Patrol Flag and Patrol flagstaff.

A bear bag and a noisemaker for chasing bears away from your campsite.

Some small line for lashings (Per person, parachute cord or equivalent, 10-20 feet)

Some larger line for a sled or travois harness (and hanging your bear bag)

Paper (small spiral bound notepad would be perfect), Pen or Pencil

Fire making stuff, (Steel & flint or a friction device and tinder, No matches or lighters)

Patrol 1st Aid Kit, Flashlight, Signal Mirror

Canteen or Water bottle (1 per person)

Neckerchief or Bandana (1 per person)

Two complete backpacks with cold weather appropriate clothing and equipment

Spare pair of socks (1 per person)

Most Important:

A snow camp is a wet environment with cold temperatures…a perfect breeding place for hypothermia. Scouts must have a change of clothes and

an emergency stash of extra dry clothes as a matter of safety. Include extra socks and a spare pair of footwear.

High altitude and dry winter air rob the body of mass quantities of water, scouts should have and carry a canteen all day and actually use

it to keep hydrated. Food and water are a requirement at bedtime to maintain body heat through the night.

Scouts must dress for Saturday’s activities using a layering system to allow for strenuous activities during the challenging events.

Troops must bring their own water supply and fire wood for campfires.

The camp will provide Porta-Potties. It wouldn’t hurt to have some extra T.P. for the paperwork.

What does the word Iditarod mean?

Iditarod is believed to come from an Athabaskan Indian word pronounced "Hi-dit-a-rod."  There are many translations for this word, but the most widely accepted meaning is "a distant or far off place."  The Iditarod River was the site of one of the last major gold strikes in Alaska in the early 20th century.  The town of Iditarod was built on the banks of this river, and the trails leading to Iditarod from Seward (on the south central coast) and Nome (on the west coast) were collectively known as the Iditarod Trail.

EVENTS for Patrols

In the morning on Saturday …

The We-ditarod Sled Race.

The Patrol packs their sled or travois with the required items (listed above) and sets off on a challenging course that includes several stops along the way. The patrol will need to provide a carved stick or token with the patrol name on it. Each stop or station will have an activity that must be completed before the patrol can move on. Each station will add a mark to the patrol’s token. The token will be presented to the official score keeper at the end of the events. A high quality token can bring the patrol bonus points.

Question: What happens if there is no snow ???

Answer: Your patrol will run the course just as if there is snow, using an A Frame travois.

Station #1 Fire Making

One member of the patrol must produce fire made by friction or with flint and steel. A complete fire lay is not required, just ignite the tinder.

Station #2 First Aid for Hypothermia – Wilderness Sheltering

Identify a hypothermia case and perform (that means ‘DO’) the steps required to care for an afflicted scout.

Station #3 Lashings

Make a flagpole for your patrol flag. Take apart you’re A Frame Travois and raise your standard high.

Station #4 Bears In The Woods – Philmont Toggle Method

Put your bear-bag together and sling it from a tree using the Philmont Toggle Method. Chase a bear out of your campsite with a noisemaker,

Station #5 Socks and Stuff

All patrol members check their socks and replace them if wet. Station Inspectors may be rotated due to air quality issues. Show that you have appropriate cold weather camping gear in your backpacks.

Station #6 First Aid for Broken Bones

Perform a splint operation on a broken leg, then transport your fallen comrade over a 50 yd course.

Station #7 Signaling Skills

Using a signal mirror and semaphore flags, send an alert to headquarters that you need help.

Final Station: Finish

Turn your token in at the Official Regulator’s Table. Your token will be graded and a final score will be announced after all the patrols are in.

Proceed to the lunch station for a hot and hearty ‘Bratwurst Bomber’ with all the fixins’ and chow down.

In the afternoon on Saturday …

Get the whole troop out for fun in the snow. Try snowball baseball or snowball football. Build a snow castle or fort and stock up with ammunition for defense against hordes of marauding tribes of snow fighters that frequent the area. If there is no snow, organize a wide area game and have fun !!

If no snow then you participate in Camp wide activities or enjoy the area’s ambience. The current plan is for an Archery Range and other activities.

Plan your skits and songs for the campfire tonight. Troops will select from the best their patrols have to offer. The troop winners will present their skit or song at headquarters before dinner for evaluation and grading. The top three patrols will present at the campfire tonight. If your troop will not be at the campfire, send your patrol with the best skit or song up to headquarters before you depart so that your troop can earn the extra points.

EVENTS for Troops

Troop Campsite Features … (things that will earn your troop points)

Best Breakfast

Provide a sample (not a whole breakfast) to the culinary experts at Headquarters. This should be a good hearty winter camp breakfast. If they ask for seconds, you know you have a winner !

Campsite Inspections

Both the campsite and the cooking area within the campsite will be inspected.

Extra Credit Points Suggestions:

Snow Shelters – Wilderness Shelter

Build a quinzee or fashion an emergency shelter from the elements.

Lash – Up – Camp Tools

Build a drying rack to air dry your salmon catch, moose meat jerky for winter food storage, or other camp gadget.

Camp Decoration

Make a snow sculpture to decorate your troop campsite with a camp site gate or entrance.

SPL’s Challenge and Scoutmaster’s Challenge

These events are closely guarded, proprietary activities that will test general scouting knowledge and abilities. Although not military in nature they will follow standard MIL-TIS-2 specifications and require adherence to sound and effective outdoor principles and practices.

Campfire Skit

One patrol from each troop will present their skit at headquarters. Winning skits earn troop points and get to perform at the campfire Saturday night. Troops leaving early can still compete for troop points by performing your skit at HQ prior to your departure.
