Little Dorrit

Sunday, 27 June 2010 New Series

This gripping new series by Andrew Davies brings to life Dickens’s powerful story of struggle and hardship in 1820s London. When

Arthur Clennam (Matthew Macfadyen) returns to England after many years abroad, his curiosity is piqued by the presence in his

mother’s house of a young seamstress, Amy Dorrit (Claire Foy).

The cold and forbidding Mrs Clennam (Judy Paritt) isn’t usually given to charity, so why has she made an exception in taking on

Amy? Is she making reparations for a past wrongdoing?

Arthur’s quest to discover the truth takes him to the Marshalsea Prison for Debt. Here he meets and befriends Amy’s father,

William Dorrit (Tom Courtenay), the prison’s longest serving inmate. As he tries to help the Dorrits, Arthur discovers that the

dark shadow of debt stretches far beyond the walls of the Marshalsea Prison, to affect the lives of many. Just as it is possible

to climb to the very top in London society’s intricate game of snakes and ladders, so it is possible to slip right down.

But if the daring and adventurous Arthur succeeds in unravelling the mystery of his family’s past, where will it leave him in

the scheme of things? And where will it leave the Dorrits?

Compass: Michael Kirby

Sunday, 27 June 2010

Filmed before, during and after his final days on the High Court of Australia, this Compass documentary about former Justice of

the High Court, Michael Kirby, explores the personal, moral and spiritual convictions of one of Australia’s most compassionate

thinkers and incisive legal minds.

Justice Michael Kirby retired from the High Court of Australia in February 2009; he was Australia’s longest-serving judge. He

was recently listed by The Bulletin magazine as one of the top ten creative minds, then again in the top 100 of the most

influential Australians of all time and more recently Who Weekly put him as one of the top 25 of the most beautiful people –

certainly a unique honour for a High Court judge.

But Michael Kirby is a unique man. In 36 years as a judge he repeatedly did the one thing that judges are not supposed to do –

he spoke publicly on an enormous range of social, political, scientific, economic, religious and humanitarian issues. Many in

the legal profession and the wider community think he speaks too much, believing that he was unable to keep his personal views

out of the courtroom.

During this documentary Michael Kirby opens up about his life in a way he has never done before. Another contradiction for a man

who has been so ‘media friendly’ throughout his professional life is that, in many ways, he has been intensely private and

guarded about his personal life. It was only nine years ago that, at the age of 61, he publicly revealed for the first time that

he has been in a homosexual relationship since 1969 with partner Johan van Vloten. This film marks the first time that Johan van

Vloten has spoken publicly about their life together.

This film shows the public face of Michael Kirby on the High Court, the private face at home with his father Donald, his late

mother Jean, his partner Johan and his brother Justice David Kirby. It also reveals the spiritual side and his lasting

connection to Anglicanism.

ditches Sammy to spend time with Tara, what Sammy feels is uncomfortably a lot like jealousy. What if he likes Christian as more

than just a friend? Meanwhile, auditions for the end of year production of The Nutcracker are upon them and Kat and Ethan’s

father - the internationally acclaimed Sebastian Karamakov (Peter O’Brien) – is directing the ballet. Who will make it and who

Poh's Kitchen

Wednesday, 30 June 2010

This week Poh moves out of her kitchen and heads off overseas – to Malaysia, the country where she was born. She is on a

three-week trip to find out more about her heritage and about the traditional dishes that come from Malaysia.

In the first week of her trip, Poh visits Kuala Lumpur, her hometown. This is a city known for its street food and immediately

after she arrives, Poh’s out on the street looking, talking and eating.

While in Kuala Lumpur Poh spends time at her grandmother’s house with her aunts and her mother. As they cook for a large family

meal, Poh learns from her great aunt how to make poppia, a kind of spring roll.

Then it’s time for a little sight-seeing and Poh goes off to visit the famous Batu Caves with their Hindu temples and Macaque

monkeys. But Poh has a date and so she leaves the caves to meet Chef Matt, famous for his roti which needs to be thrown, much

like a pizza before it’s cooked. He teaches Poh the art of roti throwing. Poh also meets Chef Shamiel, a master of the dish nasi

lemak, which, in Kuala Lumpur, is called ‘the national dish’.

Kuala Lumpur, like all of Malaysia, has wonderful markets and Poh drops into the Chow Kit Market on her way to meet Chef Ismail

whose restaurant specialises in Malay food. Ismail shows Poh his River Snail Curry and then, for the less adventuresome, his

Jackfruit and deep-fried Anchovy Curry.

Poh’s time in Kuala Lumpur ends with a night at a Malay wedding.

Next week Poh’s off to Melaka to discover more about the food she most loves, Nonya cuisine.

Thursday, 1 July 2010

When Monty Ravenscroft and Clare Loewe began looking for a house to buy in London they soon realised that the only affordable

option was to build one themselves.

Undeterred, engineering-whiz Monty began building an experimental bungalow that filled the site from boundary to boundary.

Catalyst

Thursday, 1 July 2010

This half hour documentary special is the labour–of–love child of Catalyst reporter Dr Jonica Newby. In it she explains new

science is suggesting something mind boggling: mothers are not the only ones who experience changes throughout pregnancy and

childbirth. Fathers too may be subtly primed, by their hormones, for parenting. And it looks as though it might begin before the

child is even born.

The program includes a specially commissioned national study of Australian men showing how many expectant dads experience the

Couvade Syndrome – known popularly as sympathetic pregnancy. The study was conducted by Catalyst, in conjunction with British

scientist Dr Arthur Brennan, who has previously carried out the same study in the UK.

Jonica has also been following three Australian dads-to-be, testing their hormones and their humour, as they make the transition

to fatherhood. The extraordinary results of their hormone tests will be revealed on the show. Also featuring leading

anthropologist, Dr Sarah Blaffer Hrdy.

Miracles: Miracle In The Storm

Thursday, 1 July 2010 New Series

Over the north-western plains of New South Wales, in February, 2007, German paraglider Ewa Wisnierska is sucked 10,000 metres

into a massive thunderstorm.

Facing a multitude of life-threatening forces – low oxygen, freezing temperatures and wild weather – Ewa Wisnierska (Inge

Sildnik) manages to navigate her way out of the storm, land her glider and miraculously survive with only minor frostbite.

While flying in an international paragliding competition, near the NSW rural town of Manilla, Ewa and two other pilots hit a

powerful thunderstorm. All three immediately begin a rapid descent manoeuvre know as spiralling but the cloud suck is too strong

and they just spiral in circles without descending. Massive G forces cause Ewa to almost black out and as she lets go of her

brake she is rocketed upwards into the darkness above.

Soon after, Chinese pilot He Zhongpin is also thrust upwards into the fury of thunder and lightning. The third pilot, Gerald

Ameseder, is more fortunate and while witnessing Ewa being pulled into the storm, he is able to exit the ‘biggest and most

intense storm he has ever seen in his life’.

Minutes after being pulled into the storm, tragedy strikes as He Zhongpin is hit by lightning and killed instantly.

Pulled up at 20 metres per second, the rapid ascent causes Ewa to pass out as she goes from 2,500 metres to just under 10,000

metres in around five minutes. When she pops out at the top of the storm she just circles, in wide arcs, completely unconscious

and in a hibernation-like state. Collapsing under the strain of so much ice the glider drops 3,000 metres, at over 200kph,

before reopening and waking Ewa with the jolt. Freezing and weak, she navigates herself away from the storm and down to the

ground.

Discharged from hospital with mild frostbite, Ewa, just days later, takes to the skies for a tribute flight to the dead Chinese

pilot.

drugs. And 49-year-old tradesman Mick wants to beat the booze so he can reconnect with the niece and nephew he loves.

Whatever their motivation for getting clean, rehab at the Manor is no easy ride. The addicts undergo intensive physical and

psychological therapy, designed to help them understand their addiction and equip them with the skills to manage it. They go

through rehab side-by-side, but each addict must face their own challenges: Mick has to confront the tragic childhood cause of

his addiction; James struggles to control the anger that he used to quell with drugs; Denise must fight demons of denial and

isolation; and Tim needs to find a place to live that won’t lead him back to drugs.

pays him a visit. However, unlike Rayner, Wendell has a stable life with a wife and two children, and refuses to drag up the

past because he doesn’t want his family to know.

Rayner’s portrayal of his desperate need to be loved when he was a child pulls at DI Manson’s heartstrings and he decides he has

to persuade the now more fortunate Wendell to see justice served. Wendell refuses, but later arrives at the station with his

Art Nation

Art Nation presenter Fenella Kernebone meets Paschal Daantos Berry an exciting new voice in Australian theatre. Berry’s multi-media production, The Folding Wife was staged recently as part of the 2010 Next Wave Festival in Melbourne.

The Folding Wife is loosely based on Berry’s childhood, growing up in the Philippines until he migrated to Australia aged 10. Berry’s mother married an Australian man so Berry and his sister Valerie moved with her to the remote South Australian township of Ceduna to start a new life. At school Berry began reading Henry Lawson and began to imagine his mother as The Drover’s Wife – a woman in a hostile landscape struggling to survive.

Performed by Berry’s sister Valerie, The Folding Wife looks at the stereotypical depictions of Filipino women and the history of Berry’s homeland under the shadow of Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship.

Berry says his greatest challenge lay in creating a fresh way of telling a migrant story.

Talking Heads: Tony Gaze

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson’s guest is a fighter pilot and Grand Prix driver whose life story reads like a ‘Boys Own’ adventure.

Tony Gaze grew up in Melbourne, the grandson of one of the founders of the Ezywalkin shoe chain. Gaze’s father was a member of Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

In England when World War II started, Gaze joined the RAF and flew Spitfires with the famed ‘Tangmere Wing’ and was rated by Douglas Bader and Johnnie Johnson as an exceptional pilot.

Gaze holds the rare distinction of being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for gallantry three times. He was the first Australian to fly jet aircraft operationally and the first Australian pilot to shoot down an enemy jet aircraft. He was shot down over occupied France and spent a month on the run until he escaped, with the aid of the French Resistance, over the Pyrenees. And he was the first Allied pilot to land in France after D-Day.

After the war, Gaze became the first Australian to race in World Championship Formula One. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Goodwood motor racing circuit in England. And he put together a group of Australian drivers (the ‘Kangaroo Stable’) to compete in Europe - one of them was a young man named Jack Brabham.

In the 1970’s Gaze married Diana Davison, widow of the Australian motor racing champion, Lex Davison. Her grandsons Will and Alex Davison are currently successful drivers with V8 Super Car teams.

Artscape: Necessary Games

Necessary Games is a collection of three award-winning short dance films. Featuring members of Adelaide’s Restless Dance Theatre, each of the three films showcase unique and compelling dance performances by disabled and non disabled dancers.

This week’s Artscape comprises the three films - Moths, Sixteen and Necessity and also gives the viewer an insight into the inspirations and ideas that went into making these important works. Conversations with the filmmakers, choreographers and dancers reveal a passionate and intricate understanding of dance and the connections between people.

The films were developed by a potent creative team headed by award-winning filmmakers Bryan Mason and Sophie Hyde who worked closely with top choreographers and young members of Restless Dance Theatre to create Necessary Games.

Restless Dance Theatre is an exciting Adelaide-based company where non-verbal modes of dance and movement are used as eloquent forms of self-expression. With different takes on intimacy and connection, the films present performances by diverse individuals which are raw, honest, poetic and highly idiosyncratic in nature.

The three films deal with the subjects of dreams, desire and intimacy. Each work creates an emotional connection between the dancers and inspires a physical acceptance and freedom of their diverse and, at times, surprising physicality.

A must see, Necessary Games has won numerous awards at film festivals around Australia including Best Experimental Short Film at the 2009 Melbourne International Film Festival, Best Short Film at the SA Screen Awards, and most recently Best Work for Sixteen at the ReelDance International Dance on Screen Festival.

This work is an important reminder of the right of the performer - disabled or otherwise - to be something more than an exhibit for our curiosity. RealTime - Oct/Nov 08

Artscape: Necessary Games will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, July 4 at 6:30pm

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors showcases bright minds from across the country as they discover ingenious solutions to the problems of our lives. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: futurist and author Mark Pesce, science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, and surgeon and inventor Professor Fiona Wood. Inventions featured on the program:

GARTH HITCH – by inventors Ian Garth and Jarrod Thompson from VIC

Different types of trailers require particular tow couplings. If you don’t have the correct coupling, you can’t safely connect the trailer. But what if you want to use different types of trailers? In this modern world, does anyone really want to commit to one trailer for their entire life? Ian, a mechanic who has been welding since he was seven, and Jarrod, a former member of the Monash Formula SAE Race Team and recent Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering graduate, decided to lessen the pressure of lifelong trailer commitment.

The Garth Hitch allows you to change from one hitch type to another in a matter of minutes. The change can be done by a single person with a spanner and both hitches remain attached to the truck. The invention is not only handy for individual users, it will also increase the versatility of small companies, allowing them to have a single vehicle that can adapt to all trailer types.

GALD – by inventor Russell Connally from NSW

Fluorescence microscopy is an essential tool in the detection of disease organisms. However, biological samples often contain numerous components that are intrinsically fluorescent, making it difficult to detect the few pathogens that may be present. This increases the chances that a number of serious diseases can go undetected.

The GALD is a portable device that eliminates autofluorescence in biological samples, so that dangerous bacteria can be detected much quicker and more easily. It works by using a spinning filter that reflects light onto the sample so that the fluorescence is maximised, while simultaneously cutting light to the viewer, making the fluorescent bacteria more visible.

SKIDSTEER BROOM – by inventors Garry Baum and Ronald O’Conner from VIC

It’s comforting to know that hygiene standards in the poultry industry have become a lot stronger. However, the tools needed to achieve this standard have not kept up with the times. Poultry sheds often have floors made of clay, and all those little chickens like to dig around. The result is a floor full of holes the size of dinner plates, with no machines that can clean inside them, forcing people to spend 4 to 6 hours sweeping them by hand.

Inventors Garry Baum and Ronald O’Conner were contractors in the poultry industry who were sick of spending hours of labour to do an ineffective job. They teamed up to invent the Skidsteer Broom. The invention is a row of four independently moving brush heads that attach to a skid steer loader and work around the contours of holes and corners, doing the job better and faster.
