Sample Intro

Step 1: Globally from 1000 CE to 1750 CE women possessed a patriarchal or secondary status to men. The Neolithic Revolution established permanent settlements in around 10,000 BCE. After the Neolithic, sedentary agriculture was firmly established. Women were no longer needed to hunt and gather berries. Permanent river valley civilizations developed from 10,000 BCE – 600 BCE. Job specialization developed and women were placed secondary to men. Patriarchal societies continued after the river valleys into the classical era 600BCE-600CE. During 1000 CE–1750 CE women were treated inferior throughout the world. This is evident in India where women were restricted by the rigid social and religious caste system. Patriarchal societies still exist in the modern era 1900-present in China. The One Child Policy in China has forced abortions on women and male children are preferred. Step 2: Many civilizations have and continue to discriminate against women. Step 3: The Middle East is another example of this. Step 4: Patriarchal societies have had a negative impact on women throughout the world. Step 5: In China gender discrimination was socially, politically and economically evident during the time period of 1000 CE through 1750 CE. In China more continuities were evident as women remained subservient to men; however the degree of discrimination changed throughout the various dynastic rulings and belief systems that were practiced.

Another Example:

Throughout Asia, patriarchy was socially, politically and economically evident during the time period of 1000 CE through 1750 CE. In China, the degree of discrimination towards women changed through belief systems that were practiced and the various dynastic rulings; yet more continuities were evident as women remained subservient to men.

Sample Body Paragraph

In China, patriarchal conditions changed based on the belief systems that were practiced. Since the 400s BCE Confucianism’s strict sense of hierarchy lowered the status of Chinese women. Starting in the 600s CE Confucianism was revived and transformed into a belief system known as Neo-Confucianism. The Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties are dynasties that implemented Neo-Confucianism. A dynasty is a ruling family that ruled China governmentally. Confucianism established patriarchal societies through the Five Relationships. The Five Relationships were the rules of behavior that Chinese citizens were to live by and extended patriarchy. All of the Five Relationships show the roles that were expected throughrough society. In each role there exsisted a superior and inferior being. One of the roles, husband to wife indicated that men were superior to woman. Neo-Confucianism was first introduced during the Tang and Song Dynasties during the periodization of 600CE – 1450CE. Neo-Confucianism dictated that bride’s families had to pay dowries to the groom; earlier it had been the other way around. This change in dowries made it expensive to marry off daughters and female children were not desired as a result. Changes in belief systems during this time are significant because belief systems and the dynastic rulings were intertwined. This is reinforced through the impact of state sponsored Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. The reason why gender changes were implemented in these belief systems was because of rules imposed by the different dynasties. Dynasties prompted certain belief systems in order to strengthen their dominance. While, patriarchal societies continued to exsist over time in China, conditions changed and worsened for women as the dynasties changed. Since dynasties controlled political, economic and social aspects of life, it reinforces that women’s rights were impacted by belief systems.

Sample reason/significance/argument for continuities: The reason why patriarchy remained continuous in China is because it was a part of the culture and traditions that were engrained into society. China’s geography resulted in them being isolated. After the Ming Empire and the death of the emperor Yongle, explorers like Zheng He ceased to exist from 1450 onward. This made cultural diffusion difficult as China was already a large landmass and closing it off made it harder for new ideas to spread. China continues to be patriarchal today. The Once Child Policy that was implemented in the modern era requires families to have only one child who is preferably male. The One Child Policy gives tax relief and special benefits to those who only have one male child. The One Child Policy was implemented by the Communist Party in China. The collapse of the dynasties is significant because it made communism seem more appealing in China. Communism offered a solution to the industrialization and modernization China lacked under the dynasties. However, communism continues to oppress women today. Communism corroborates that patriarchy is still a continuity in China.
