during Occupational Health Awareness Week
"Unseenamerica NYS: Pictures of Working Life Taken by Working Hands," a project of the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), is the name of a photo exhibit to be highlighted in the New York State Capitol during the nation's 2nd Occupational Health Awareness (OHA) Week, April 27 and to May 4, 2011. The goal of the week, created by the New York State Occupational Health Clinic Network with the support of the New York State AFL-CIO, state Committees for Occupational Safety and Health and others, is to increase awareness of the need for healthy workplaces and a reduction in work-related death and disability.
The exhibit, thanks to the generosity of the WDI’s Art of Labor Program and on display thanks to Assemblyman Keith Wright and Assemblyman Rory Lancman, is one of the products of an innovative labor and arts project – one that gives workers, immigrants and refugees the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The initiative helps bring workers’ stories to public spaces and attention, and integrates the unheard voices of New York’s working people into the larger social and cultural fabric of our state. Embodied in each piece on display is a transformative perspective which allows looking, for a moment, through another’s eyes.
The show features photographs of and stories by healthcare workers, tractor-trailer drivers, janitors, security guards, teachers, immigrants from India and Peru, refugees from Burma, Bosnia, Darfur, Somalia and scores of others.
Unseenamerica NYS is a collaboration of the WDI, NYS AFL-CIO and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199SEIU. For more information about the show itself, contact Ed Murphy: 518-463-2141 or emurphy@. For more information about or to join in supporting OHA Week, check out
