TLG Session Outline and Discussion Question

“A Real Man Deals With Fear” Notes

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries February 6, 2008

Session Outline:

Phil. 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid?

There are three strong images in this passage…

Light as a symbol of truth

Salvation relates to God’s power of deliverance

Stronghold means fortress or protection

Christian psychologist, Dr. Henry Cloud suggests that fear may not be a bad thing. It is how we react to fear that determines a positive or negative outcome. Fear is from the Devil. He would neutralize our witness and work for Christ by introducing immobilizing fear into our thoughts and lives. If fear is from the Devil, how can fear ever be a good thing? We all face fears, but fear should mobilize us to action …to overcome the object of our fear.

Cloud lists some good things to fear…

1. fear of being isolated…disconnected from yourself…leads us to need to be accepted, validated…separates us from God and His work and creates a lust for more…for power…takes you away from using your true gifts and talents…this fear stops us from getting feedback from others, which we need to improve.

2. fear of being disconnected from the hearts of people you are leading or deal with…we need trusting relationships

3. fear of personal isolation…do we want to run and get away from it all …or just get away ro replenish ourselves

4. fear of leading in a way that is not sustainable…our work should be tiring, but motivating. ..avoid burnout loss of passion

5. fear of lack of personal or organizational resources…don’t have the resources to sustain growth

6. fear of being defensive…instead, we should welcome feed back to find solutions to problems

7. fear of God…holy fear is positive…it mobilizes us to live a life of obedience to the Word,…do what is right and live a life of integrity

Cloud lists some things that are bad things to fear, especially as a leader…

1. fear of not looking good…loss of image…instead, be confident in who you are in Christ, not man

2. fear of having our mistakes exposed…we all make mistakes…instead, admit them…people admire those willing to admit their mistakes and not try to shift the blame to others

3. fear of seeing our faults and weakness…instead, we must see them to correct then…be hungry for feedback…ask for it.

4. fear of other people getting the credit…instead, give honor to others…release them to achieve

5. fear of giving others freedom….equal to their responsibility…instead, hold them accountable and let go…don’t control or over manage

6. fear of problems…embrace negative things….always thinking that the worst will happen…instead, view problems as an opportunity to achieve and improve…. Discuss Rosie’s fear

Roosevelt: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Life Application: The bottom line is for us to be afraid of the right things and go to God to overcome our fears.

(2 Tim 1:7 NIV) For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

"He has not learned the lesson of life who does not every day surmount a fear." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–82)

Ever since the curse in the garden man has been battling fear. Fear results when I am not secure in a matter, my goals are being blocked. It is a very natural emotion and is to be expected. Our response to fear will determine the level to which fear will control or dominate our life.

Life Implication:

"No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear." Edmund Burke (1729–97)

Un-dealt with fear can become a major obstacle in establishing a meaningful relationship with God. It can also destroy families. The most common form of fear that men face is stress. This kind of fear is often driven by a man’s inborn fear-of-failure.

The kind of fear we need, is fear of God. It is the fear that brings wisdom. Holy fear can only happen as we form an intimate relationship with God.

In order to overcome unhealthy fear, determine to be in the word, praying and praising God every day.

Pray like this: Lord, these are my fears; this is the truth about me. I repent of trying to hide my fears instead of asking you to remove them. I repent of my denial. I recognize that you are the truth., and the truth will set me free. You have the final say on matters of life and death and to allow my life to be dictated by fear is a denial of your power. I also recognize my own inability to resolve my fears and so I surrender them to you.I lay my fears at your feet and ask you to remove them. I now trust you to show me what to do next.

Discussion Question:

What fear or fears do you most struggle with? What are some practical ways that you can overcome this fear?

READ AND PRAY THESE VERSES ON FEAR

Phil. 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Ps. 91:4-5 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,

Prov. 3:25-26 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.

Ps. 56:11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Rom. 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

1John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Ps. 91:11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

Ps. 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Rom. 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Rom. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

Rom. 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ps. 31:24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Ps. 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Hebr. 13:6 So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

Quote attributed to John Calvin: Those who think faith is exempt from fear have had no real experience of living by faith. God no where promises that we will not suffer or become afraid in this life. What He does promise is that fear will not prevail and thereby overwhelm us in despair. You know your faith is real if in your fear you continue to pray and do the right thing…confess your fears, and ask Him to help you overcome them.

Fear: The painful feeling of impending danger, evil, or trouble; to be filled with apprehension.

Anxious: full of mental distress or uneasiness because of fear of danger or misfortune; greatly worried; having anxiety, troubled, uneasy in mind, apprehensive

Anxiety: concern or solicitude respecting some event, future or uncertain, which disturbs the mind and keeps it in a state of painful uneasiness…the state of being anxious.

(John 8:32 NIV) Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

(Mat 11:28-30 NIV) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
