CAMSN Newsletter: Spring 2016 Edition

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I became a member of our Association in June of 2014 after presenting at the CAMSN conference in Calgary, Alberta on Collaborative Practice and Full Scope of Practice for the Registered Nurse. It wasn’t until 2015 that I took on the role of President and I feel very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful team. The CAMSN is an association dedicated to support evidence-based practice in the Medical and Surgical specialties. It emphasizes the benefits of attaining CNA certification through writing the Canadian Medical Surgical Nursing exam. In addition, we offer a link to the medical surgical community in Canada and a forum to share new ideas, knowledge and questions amongst our professional group. Every two years we host a conference featuring emerging topics in our practice area and we encourage all who are able to attend to partake in this event to build connections within our community.

I would like to thank a few of our hard working past members of our executive. Pam Mangold and Noelle Rohatinsky have stepped down from their official roles as Past President and Communications Lead but remain important members of our team. I’d also like to thank Liz Farrell for her dedication to her role as Treasurer for the CAMSN and wish her well on her new endeavours.

2015 CAMSN Executive

CAMSN is an associate member of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA)

Our Vision

To be the voice of medical and surgical nurses in Canada

Our Mission

Medical and surgical nurses provide nursing care to adults experiencing complex variations in health. They utilize diverse clinical knowledge and skills to care for multiple acutely ill adults and their families. They are leaders at organizing, prioritizing and coordinating care as well as working with interdisciplinary teams. The practice of medical-surgical nursing requires application of evidence-based knowledge and best practice standards to provide quality, safe and ethical care to clients across the continuum of care. The CAMSN nurses advocates, supports and promotes the integral role of medical and surgical nurses to the health care system.

About Us

My name is Carol Ann Connors. I graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2008. Since graduation, I have been employed as a Registered Nurse at the Aberdeen Regional Hospital until May of 2015 when I accepted a position with STFX as Nurse Educator. I am involved in numerous volunteer activities within my community. I am a BLS Healthcare Instructor, and I manage and coach a local hockey team, just to name a few! I enjoy being active with my three sons and watching them grow, and taking any opportunity to teach and educate people with the knowledge I have gained throughout my career. I am very excited to be a part of CAMSN!

Welcome to our new treasurer!

What’s next

My name is Laura Vogelsang. I am an instructor with the University of Saskatchewan College of Nursing, PhD student, and a proud medical-surgical nurse! My background is primarily general medicine however I have also worked on geriatric, cardiac, and renal focused units. Recently I made the transition into rural nursing and I love it. In my career it didn’t take long for me to realize that along with caring for the adult population, nursing education had a special place in my heart. My baccalaureate education at the University of Lethbridge was something I truly loved and I wanted to be part of giving that to the next generation of nurses, all while asking “what can we do better?” That prompted my move to the larger (and colder!) city of Saskatoon, where I took the course-based Master of Nursing program at the University of Saskatchewan. I can honestly say that through the mentorship and support I have received as both a student and faculty I have never doubted that I am where I need to be. Ongoing professional development has remained a priority for me and in 2015 I wrote the CNA Medical-surgical nursing certification exam, it was equally challenging and fulfilling – I would encourage anyone thinking about it to take the plunge!

The focus of my research is on supporting both students and instructors in the clinical area. I am especially interested in ‘today’s learner’ and how students today are increasingly able to access up-to-date knowledge with their mobile devices without ever leaving the patient’s bedside. As with any technology there comes both opportunities and challenges. What potential does mobile technology have for supporting student’s learning needs as well as the demands placed on instructors? That is one of the many questions I hope to find out!
