EBRP Library Now Offers Premium Online Film Service

Great Movies, Documentaries, Indie Films Available FREE to All Library Patrons

Your East Baton Rouge Parish Library is pleased to announce the launch of a new streaming video service, Kanopy, to our digital collection! Patrons now can access Kanopy and watch films and documentaries FREE anytime by visiting DigitalLibrary. Watch 15 movies per month, with three days to view each film.

A video streaming platform for libraries with one of the largest and most unique collections in the world, Kanopy features more than 26,000 movies, documentaries and indie and foreign films from over hundreds of producers including The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, Kino Lorber and PBS, plus thousands of independent filmmakers. Kanopy's motto is "thoughtful entertainment"-- seeking to provide you with access to films of unique social and cultural value. These entertaining films are

often difficult or impossible to access elsewhere.

This resource also is committed to diversity, with an amazing array of foreign language films and films on race, LGBT and others. Its films also are compatible for the hearing (with captions and transcripts) and visually impaired (compatible with technologies such as JAWS). The new

Movies on the Plaza Series is Back!

We're excited because it's finally time for the FREE Movies on the Plaza Series to return! Everyone can come to the Main Library at Goodwood at 7 p.m. every Friday in June. We'll play a fun movie on the Outdoor Plaza that the whole family will enjoy. Feel free to bring your lawn chair or blanket to sit comfortably while you watch. We also will simulcast the film in the Large Meeting Room for those who prefer an air conditioned option. Local vendors and food trucks will be on site for the purchase of refreshments. Louisiana Characters: Biographies of the Bayou State

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library along with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities is sponsoring a FREE Readings in Literature and Culture (RELIC) program at the Central Branch from 5:45 until 7:45 p.m. on Thursdays this month. Charles N. Elliott from the Department of History and Political Science at Southeastern Louisiana University will introduce readings and direct discussions reconsidering Louisiana's rich and diverse cultural heritage as seen through the biographical spectacles of significant historical characters. In a relaxed setting and engaging format, adults will explore the best of Louisiana's classic and contemporary political, social, literary and regional biographies, including Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans by Louis Armstrong and The Last Madam: A Life in the New Orleans Underworld by Christine Wiltz. Red Stick Farmers Market at the Library

The Red Stick Farmers Market will host a seasonal mobile market at the Main Library at Goodwood at 8 a.m. ? noon every Tuesday in June. Red Stick Farmers is an open air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the Market is grown locally by each farmer. With more than 50 member farmers, it offers a variety of locally grown products, including fresh fruits, local plants, herbs and vegetables, plus meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese and specialty food items. Cash, credit, debit and Louisiana Purchase EBT/ SNAP benefits cards all are accepted for payment at every location of the Red Stick Farmers Market.

Learn How to Create a Home Inventory

It's hurricane season! Have you made preparations? One thing that will help in case a disaster strikes is having a home inventory prepared for emergency and insurance purposes. This task may seem overwhelming, but Certified Professional Organizer Alyssa Trosclair will be at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch at 6 p.m. Monday, June 12, to teach adults the steps to success!

SAVE THE DATE! Rough Drafts: Beer Lecture Series

Have you ever wondered where beer comes from? How does it pair with food? If you'd like to learn more about beer, you'll want to join other adults at the Main Library at Goodwood at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, for a FREE monthly lecture series hosted by Robbie Wendeborn from local brewing company Tin Roof. Find out delicious facts about beer, brewing and how this drink fits into the rich culinary culture of Louisiana. Attendees even will have the chance to sample a variety of beers! Each presentation begins at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, and will be led by various brewing professionals and hobbyists. Alcohol will be served. This event is for adults 21 and older only, and valid picture identification will be required prior to entry.

The LSU Disaster Resilience and Recovery

Project is Seeking Volunteers

The Louisiana State University (LSU) Disaster Resilience and Recovery Project is doing a study on the Great Flood of 2016, and is seeking volunteers to assist. The Project will consist of interviewing adults ages 18 and older who live in East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Ascension parishes and were exposed to the Great Flood of 2016. The research team also would like to hear from the special subset group of those who relocated to the area after experiencing loss during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators Meeting

The local organization of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) will host a FREE informational meeting for adults at the Main Library at Goodwood at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, to discuss children's book writing and illustrating as well as establishing monthly meetings for adult writers and illustrators. On September 21, 1779, Don Bernard de Galvez, along with Oliver Pollock, his troop of Regulars, militiamen, free African-Americans and biracial persons, American volunteers, Cajuns and Indians captured the fort at Baton Rouge under the control of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Dickson. Check Out the DigitalLearn Computer Literacy Platform!

We are excited to announce a new resource in the Digital Library, EBRPL DigitalLearn. This resource offers basic computer literacy training on demand, through short, easy-to-use interactive courses. The EBRP Library was one of three library systems in the nation chosen to pilot the Digital Literacy Initiative's new learning platform.

Courses start with basics like Using a PC, Intro to Email and Microsoft Word, but also include more specific topics such as Introduction to Skype, Cloud Storage, Online Scams and Creating Resum?s. No Library card is required. All courses are also available in Spanish and more courses will be added over time.

DigitalLearn will be a great tool for patrons starting out with computers--even if they have never even touched a mouse or have only the most basic familiarity with technology. To get started, simply go online to ebrpl..

In 1810, several West Florida inhabitants began organizing conventions to plan a rebellion. Among them was Baton Rouge native Fulwar Skipwith. At least one convention was held in a house on a street that has since been renamed Convention Street in their honor. On September 23, 1810, the rebels overcame the Spanish garrison at Baton Rouge and unfurled the flag of the new Republic of West Florida, known as the Bonnie Blue Flag which had a single white star on a blue field and inspired the later Lone Star flag of Texas. Join the Main Library Walking & Aerobics Club!

The Main Library Walking Club has expanded its schedule and now includes an aerobic workout session. Adults are invited to the Main Library at Goodwood four times per week to get moving! On outdoor walking days, we will walk around the Library and through the nearby gardens. Every fourth Tuesday we will begin by climbing stairs to the third floor before and after a brief walk. Crafting for a Cause at Pride

Crochet Compassion with Plastic Bags

Adults are invited to learn how to turn plastic bags into plastic yarn (plarn) at the Jones Creek Regional Branch at 10 a.m. Thursdays, June 1 and 15. Turn plarn into a lightweight, weather resistant sleeping mat that can be used by those that are in need. No crochet skills are necessary. Share your compassion by flattening bags, cutting strips and making balls of plarn.

Adults only are invited to the Eden Park Branch at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, to make candles in the shape of icicles by dipping hot wax into water. These are beautiful and perfect for any party! All supplies will be provided.

Find out what your hands can create with paper when you join other adults at the Main Library at Goodwood at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 8, for the 3D Origami Club. We'll teach you how to make origami in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. All skill levels are welcome. Snacks will be served.

Scrapbooking Saturday for Adults

Join us for scrapbooking classes at the Library! Adults can bring old and new photos, mementos from vacation and travel, bits of fabric and other special memory items to the Delmont Gardens Branch at 10 a.m. Saturdays, June 3 and 17. We'll show you how to arrange them in a memory-keeping book. Both beginner and advanced scrapbookers are welcome! Please bring your own photos and scrapbooking paper.
