Environmental Geomatics

Assistant / Associate Professor

(Tenure-Track Position)

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Geography program invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Environmental Geomatics at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. For more information on the Geography Program and Prince George / northern BC, please visit and respectively.

The anticipated start date for the position is 1 July, 2017, though a later start date is negotiable.

Ranked as Canada’s best small university, the University of Northern British Columbia is a research-intensive university with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students in more than 40 undergraduate and graduate academic programs. UNBC offers a modern and attractive campus, and a wonderful setting in the heart of British Columbia.

We seek an outstanding individual who can develop an externally funded long-term research program that will enhance the capacity of geomatics research and teaching at UNBC. Specifically, we seek a candidate who develops innovative geospatial technologies in their environmental research. We are especially interested in candidates who participate in interdisciplinary research at a university with an integrated structure.

Applicants for this position must hold a PhD in Geomatics, Physical Geography, Earth or Environmental Sciences or a closely-related field. Successful candidates will have a strong publication record, demonstrated success or strong potential to secure external research grants, and must present evidence of excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Accelerated resource development in Canada’s north coupled with rapid climate change, for example, requires geomatics specialists who also understand environmental processes. This position will support the BSc program in Geography and the interdisciplinary approaches used in the undergraduate and graduate programs. This position will build on existing geomatic resources and add important new capabilities in spatial technologies which would support a broad range of other academic units within the University, as well as support local technology companies by providing trained students as interns, co-op placements, and ultimately graduate students from UNBC.

The UNBC GIS Lab is already a key asset to UNBC and our northern BC community. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help create and grow a Geomatics Hub at UNBC that will help foster innovation and technological advancements in geomatics. Geography now seeks to develop a Geomatics Hub that fosters innovation and technological advancements in Geomatics. The concept of an interdisciplinary Geomatics Hub brings research and teaching interests together with a critical mass of businesses, governmental and non-governmental agencies, First Nations communities, and other practitioners within the local and regional geomatics community. UNBC is equipped with significant research facilities and infrastructure for the physical and social sciences. UNBC has existing collaborative links with local geospatial companies, houses a high-performance computing infrastructure, and owns an airborne LiDAR system.

UNBC provides broad support for faculty to develop their research and teaching capabilities, a strong mandate for growth, a modern and comprehensive campus, and a distinctive quality of life in north-central British Columbia. The University has a mandate to serve the northern two-thirds of the province and enjoys strong community connections.

Applicants should forward their cover letter, curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of three references (including telephone, fax, and email information) quoting competition FAGE05-17 to: The Office of the Provost, University of Northern British Columbia, 3333 University Way, Prince George, B.C., V2N 4Z9. Fax: (250) 960-5791. Please direct inquiries to: Dr. Catherine Nolin, Chair of Geography, at Telephone: (250)960-5875, Email: Catherine.Nolin@unbc.ca. Electronic submissions can be forwarded to: FacultyRecruitment@unbc.ca .

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The University of Northern British Columbia is committed to employment equity and encourages applications from women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.
