The Ninemile District is part of a zoned organization that includes Seeley Lake and Missoula Ranger Districts. The Superior District is part of a zoned organization that includes Plains Ranger District. These positions works in collaboration with the East and West Zone ID Teams to manage the development, production, conservation, and utilization of the natural resources of the zone. The individuals are key members of the Forest Leadership Team and report directly to the Lolo Forest Supervisor. DutiesAs a member of the Forest Leadership Team, these positions works to formulate plans, policies, and objectives for the Forest. They will provide recommendations to the Forest Supervisor concerning budget and personnel, timber, recreation, fire, wildlife, wilderness, range, lands and special uses, minerals, law enforcement, watershed, pest management and interrelated social, economic, and political considerations within the District and zone. The District Rangers will advise zone staff and make decisions or changes to programs and projects within delegated authority.The District Rangers will establish and maintain cooperative relations with local, county, and State representatives, special interest groups, civic groups, private industry, Tribal government, permittees, and the general public. These positions will promote understanding and acceptance for Forest Service program goals and objectives, policies, and regulations. They will stay informed of all current social, political, and economic issues within the greater Missoula area.The District Rangers are responsible for program management, planning, budgeting and management information (PBMI) for identifying work force and organizational needs, and district priorities. These position are the direct supervisors for the primary District staff as well as several zoned personnel.The District Rangers may be assigned Forest Staff level responsibilities in addition to their district/zone program of work. Housing may be available for these munity InformationLOLO NATIONAL FOREST: The two-million-acre Lolo National Forest (NF) in west central Montana is one of ten national forests in Montana. Created in 1906, the Lolo NF now includes former national forests originally named the "Cabinet," "Hell Gate, "Missoula," and "Selway" National Forests.Located west of the continental divide, the Lolo NF is influenced by both continental and maritime climates. These climates provide for a wide range of environmental gradients producing a forest of high diversity. Diverse ecosystems range from wet, western red cedar bottoms to high alpine peaks, and forests of alpine larch and white bark pine.These diverse ecosystems are home for 17 conifer and 5 hardwood tree species, over 300 bird species, at least 20 fish species, over 60 mammal species and an estimated 1,500 plant species, including 250 non-native plant species. Within the Lolo NF, are record-sized trees, the Montana Champion ponderosa pine located in the Fish Creek drainage and a national co-champion western larch near Seeley Lake.Elevation ranges from less than 2,400 ft. on the Clark Fork River below Thompson Falls to many peaks over 7,000 ft. and topping out at over 9,000 ft. at Lolo Peak near the town of Lolo and Ptarmigan Point near Seeley Lake. The highest point is Scapegoat Mountain within the Scapegoat Wilderness.Water is plentiful within the Lolo NF producing over 100 named lakes and nearly 1,000 named streams including five major rivers. Ninemile Ranger District, HUSON, MT:The Ninemile Ranger District has a diverse landscape that creates a need for a variety of programs. The district includes 360,000 acres of the National Forest System Lands that supports a vegetation management program involving timber management, wildlife habitat improvement as well as hazardous fuels reduction objectives. Within the District boundaries are an additional 75,000 acres of privately owned timber production ground and an additional 25,000 acres of private residential property, these acres are within the Districts wildfire suppression protection jurisdiction. The Ninemile Ranger District is located in Huson, Montana, at the National Historic Remount Station. The administrative site is home to a large majority of the Region 1 pack stock in the winter and is a working ranch.The district is known for providing dispersed recreation opportunities that include, hiking, hunting, fishing, trail riders (motorized and non-motorized) for the greater Missoula area and local folks.Located in Western Montana just 25 miles west of Missoula (population 75,000) a full service community, the duty station offers both a rural and urban setting to choose from with a large housing market. Limited rental opportunities exist within the Huson and Frenchtown communities.Huson is service by the Frenchtown School District with K-12. The commuting area is service by the Alberton School District, Missoula School District and the Hellgate School ernment housing may be available at the time this position is filled. The District office is also a reasonable commute from the Missoula area which offers a full array of housing opportunities.Housing costs range from 180,000 to 300,000 within all commuting areas.Superior Ranger District, SUPERIOR, MT:The town of Superior is located on the Clark Fork River, about 55 miles west of Missoula and 47 miles east of the Montana/Idaho border at Lookout Pass. It is the county seat of Mineral County. The population of Superior is about 800, and the population of Mineral County is about 3500. Interstate 90 runs the length of Mineral County, and is a major travel route for accessing recreational opportunities and nearby facilities and services. The elevation of Superior is 2710', and the surrounding mountains include peaks up to 7700'. Precipitation averages 16-18 inches/year in the valley bottoms. The summertime average high temperature is 85 degrees, and the wintertime average low temperature is 20 degrees. Home prices in the area range from $100,000 to $350,000. A variety of private rentals are available. Government housing is not available at this time, but a bunkhouse is available during the summer months. There are schools with grades K-12 both in Superior and in St. Regis. Mineral Community Hospital is located in Superior. Major medical facilities and regional shopping facilities are available in Missoula. The University of Montana is also located in Missoula. Commercial airports are located in Missoula and in Spokane, Washington. Outdoor recreational opportunities are plentiful in Mineral County. There are 5 developed campgrounds, over 700 dispersed recreation sites, 5 drive-to high elevation lakes, over 40 other mountain lakes, miles of streams and rivers, over 400 miles of trails, the Lookout Pass ski area, the Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike trail, rafting and floating including the Alberton Gorge, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and excellent fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. There is a golf course in St. Regis and tennis courts and a pool in Superior.
