It was just a little over a week ago that I had to send you an email announcing that school would be cancelled for a week. Now, we are looking at resuming no sooner than April 6th. However, nothing is certain. We have all had to deal with uncertainty. With uncertainty, we see a lot of fear. It is the fear of not knowing what will come next. You see, it is our nature to want routine. We want to know what comes next. When we don’t know, it generates and uncertainty and fear. Fear is a paralyzer. It can take away good decision making and causes panic, and people do irrational things like buying up all the toilet paper or hoarding as much as they can. We saw something similar just a couple of years ago, when an internet rumor created the fear that there would not be enough gas. So, what happened? The rush to buy up the available gas created a temporary shortage. What we are facing now is not a rumor, but a reality. Is it scary? Absolutely! But when we keep our heads, we do some smart things, like washing our hands, and observing social distancing as much as we can to limit the spread of the virus. You see, I refuse to give in to fear. How? By focusing on doing what I can for my kids and families. Leading the charge for distance education for our Brahmas. I recognize that I have the power to act and do something positive in a difficult time. I have the power to plan and communicate to keep everyone informed. I act out of the love that I have for my kids, my families and my staff. That love overcomes any fear that may come knocking on my door. I have taken advantage of this time to enjoy the time that I am able to spend with my wife, which I normally don’t have at this time of the year. I have the time to think carefully, rationally, and with a sound mind. I do not in any way want to minimize the current situation. It is very serious. However, being afraid and worrying will not make it any less of a problem. I know that by working together we can see this through. By communicating and staying connected, we are stronger. I encourage you to not go strictly by what you get over social media. Remember the gas scare! NEISD has a great Critical Information section on the district webpage. Trust that I will do everything I can to update you all, even if I have to do it from home. I am sending this newsletter to my kids as well as my parents. They deserve to be updates as much as anyone. For now, we will learn from a distance, but I know this will eventually pass. I look forward to the day when the hallways are full again, and I get to see you all. Until then, I send you love and blessings. Go Brahmas!
