However, there is an increasing awareness of the need for parity of esteem between physical and mental health to begin to address these issues. The profile of mental health has been raised during the coronavirus pandemic, so it is time to capitalise on this and look to future workforce development to meet ever-more complex needs and ensure we are moving towards parity of esteem. It is also a time to acknowledge that mental health issues affect us all in the move towards increasingly integrated care and different ways of working. While some nurses have historically practised at an advanced level in mental health, there has been little consideration of the discrete and distinct role of the advanced nurse practitioner in mental health (ANPMH), which comes with a defined set of competencies including non-medical prescribing and advanced physical health skills. Physical health services and patients have benefited from advanced nurse practice roles for over 20 years; more recently as entry to this level of practice has become multiprofessional, advanced clinical practice roles are becoming an intrinsic part of physical health workforce development. As well as improving patient care, advanced nursing practice allows for a more defined career pathway for senior nurses who wish to remain clinically focused, enabling them to progress to consultant level through a clinical academic, validated and accredited route. This article is an early contributor to an evolving discussion about the added value and necessity of advanced clinical practice roles in mental health workforce development and service transformation across all healthcare provision.
