Summer Reading Assignment

For incoming sophomores

➢ Below you will find a list of short stories by various authors.

➢ You need to choose three (3) of these stories. Below are weblinks to help you find the story. These stories can also be found at any library.

➢ You also need to find a short story not on this list- one of your own choosing.

➢ For each of these stories, you need to write a literature reflection. These reflections are not book reports. They are observations, opinions and conversations about what you are reading. Avoid plot summary. Use the following format and questions to help you write at least one page on each story:

➢ DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Heading:

Name: Date:

Title of Story: Author:

P 1. One short paragraph summary of your story.

P 2. What did you like best about the story? (Characters? Setting?)

P 3. What did you like least about your story? (Characters? Plot?)

P 4. If you could add another paragraph to the ending of the story,

what would it be (How would you continue the story)?

➢ You also need to fill out one column of the literature grid for each of the stories you read. Therefore, you will have a total of 4 literature reflections and 4 literature grid responses.

➢ This information will be used in the beginning of the year to write essays and will also act as foundations for discussion.

➢ You may be asked to give a quick book talk on the fourth story you chose. Be prepared for that, as well.

➢ This assignment counts as a project and up to 10% of your first marking period grade.
