VISITORS and GUESTS

Joining us for breakfast, we had Leon Cake and Ginny Bruckner, KidSport Nanaimo; Igor Kowalski & Catherine Chen 2019-2020 inbound youth exchange students and Wayne Anderson, our assistant district governor. .

THIS WEEK THERE WERE NO BIRTHDAYS OR ANNIVERSARIES

CLUB PRESIDENT BARRY SPARKES

Barry extended a warm welcome to members and guests and he gave us a brief history lesson about World Polio Day and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Initiative is a public private partnership led by national governments with five partners – the World Health organization, RI, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the UN Children’s’ Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

World Polio Day, October 24th, was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

FOUNDATION

$ 95 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Stephen Cochrane had the lucky ticket drawn for $ 15

SERGEANT AT ARMS – DAVE ELGIE

Stephen had a happy $ thank-you to everyone who helped with Youth-A-Palooza. With 250 attendees, this first time event to talk about mental health was a great success. Just home from Newfoundland, Mark was impressed with efficiencies observed in Forestry. Reminder from Doug, the Poppy campaign is underway. Both Rachel and Michael supported the Book Sale and came away with lots of reading material. Neil was happy to have behind him his first speaking engagement at the engineering conference. Appears he was well prepared and has received an invite for future events. Update from Wayne, Mayor Krog proclaimed October 24-31st as ‘Rotary “End Polio Now” Days’. Grumpy $’s as to $ 1. 52 for gas. Greg spoke glowingly about what a gem we have with the Port Theatre. Dave was very happy with the outstanding response for the upcoming Saturday 7-10 breakfast.

Randy’s turn, and once again there was no joker. Next week’s pot is $ 430.

ROTARY MINUTE – GREG DEVENISH

Greg gave a well-researched historical review about ‘Polio’ – its impact, changing treatments and people affected. Around 1900 major epidemics began to appear in Europe and the U.S. In 1916 there were over 27,000 cases and more than 6,000 deaths in the U.S. In Canada the disease peaked in 1953 with nearly 9,000 cases and 500 deaths. 1928 saw the introduction of the Iron Lung. In 1940 Sister Kenney started the use of a form of physiotherapy that became the hallmark treatment for polio victims. The Salk vaccination was introduced in 1955. By 1957 the incidence of polio in the U.S. had fallen by 90%. In 1994 Canada was certified “polio free”.

There was never a typical polio victim. It was and still is a ruthless disease. A few notables affected by Polio include Franklin Roosevelt, Donald Sutherland, Mia Farrow, Garth Drabinsky and Judy Collins.

KidSport Nanaimo directors Ginny Bruckner and Leon Cake gave us an overview of this not-for-profit Canadian organization. In 1993 KidSport was created to provide financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids 18 and under through a confidential application process. Nationally there are 166 community KidSport chapters. Each chapter manages all operations, including fundraising, application intake and grant distribution.

Recent Stats Canada information tells us many Nanaimo families are living in poverty and that 25% of our population falls into the low income category. Today, in 2019 KidSport Nanaimo has funded 93 children at a cost of $ 200 per child. The sports funded include swimming, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, karate, bowling and taekwondo. Ongoing, always their goal is to meet applicant requests with funding and also to increase funding to better reflect current sports registration fees. Most requested this year has been support for soccer participation/registration fees.

Points to ponder:

• 1 in 3 families cannot afford the cost of organized sport.

• Playing a Sport enhances self-esteem and has important emotional benefits.

• Regular participation in athletics helps build young minds.

• Children need daily 60 minutes of activity

• Sports participation at all ages contributes to building strong, healthy, vibrant communities.

SUBMISSIONS, UPCOMING EVENTS

October 29th - Rotary North Beer & Burger

White Spot, Woodgrove, $ 25

District 5020 PolioPlus Society

A new initiative, Society members are asked to pledge to donate $ 100 USD or more each year until polio is eradicated. To join all you need to do is complete the PolioPlus Society pledge form available at . This is one more way that Rotarians can help the world become polio-free.

‘65 years later, this is what Polio looks like when a child is not vaccinated. End Polio Now!’

Samaritan House

With colder temperatures, we have been asked for ‘warm’ clothing donations. Over the next month, new or gently used hoodies, pajamas, sweatpants, t-shirts, slippers, gloves and rain gear etc. are in great demand. All donations can be dropped off at a Club meeting. Dale W. will make the delivery.

CATHERINE CHEN – IGOR KOWALSKI

Our Rotary Youth Exchange Students

Catherine’s home country is Taiwan. Her first month, away from home was traumatic – different foods, no friends, learning a new language. With a big smile, she told us she is making great progress and enjoyed making new friends.

Igor comes to us from Poland. He enjoyed his Seattle week-end. School in Canada is easy. He is playing soccer and very much looking forward to Halloween activities.
