Granville Elementary School

The Reading Den K-1 The Reading Nest 2-3

GOAL:

The overall goal of the program is to help children develop their reading potential.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Title I reading program is designed to provide a multi-sensory approach to reading. Children need to hear it, see it, say it and do it, in order to remember their learning. Mrs. Ruth Ellen Kozman (K-1) and Mrs. Lisa Hartshorn (2-3), are highly trained to meet the needs of auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. Your child will receive an individualized approach in a small group. This is a pull-out program in which students receive supplemental reading instruction. Their classroom reading progress is reviewed with the classroom teacher at regular intervals using a contact form and informal talks.

Lessons are designed to meet the needs of your child.

Reading is a skill. The more you practice, the better you become. The focus during your child’s class time will be phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency.

SELECTION PROCESS:

• Current kindergarten children are referred for additional support based on their performance with the DIBELS NEXT assessment (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), BAS (Benchmarks Assessment System) sight word checks, MAP reading assessment and through the RTI (Response to Intervention) process.

• First graders are considered for admission into the reading program based on the results of assessments administered at the end of kindergarten, DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), BAS (Benchmarks Assessment System), DIBELS NEXT (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), MAP reading assessment and through the RTI (Response to Intervention) process.

• Second and Third Grade students are also admitted to the program based on the results of assessments administered at the end of the previous grade level, the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), BAS (Benchmarks Assessment System), DIBELS NEXT assessment (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), MAP reading assessment, and through the RTI (Response to Intervention) process.

• Teachers may refer a child anytime throughout the year.

• Parent permission of the selected student is required to indicate his/her acceptance.

STUDENT EVALUATION:

Children are assessed both formally and informally. There will be specific tests administered throughout the year and progress is monitored frequently. Written report cards will travel home every nine week period. We specifically note how your child is hearing and processing sound. Are they able to read and write the syllable patterns being taught with our Fundations Phonics program? Children will read books and word studies targeting specific skills/patterns.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT:

Parent involvement in school life is extremely important and does make an incredible difference in the success of your child. Due to various like styles, parents must make a decision on how they will become involved in their child’s reading success. Most involvement will occur in the home. An adult needs to attend to and listen to the child read. Instruction takes place at school with some opportunities to practice. Practice really must happen at home.

Parents can be involved by:

• Attending the Meet the Reading Teacher Night in the September/October

• Visiting the GES Website to be aware of your parental rights

• Visiting the Ohio Parent Information and Resource Center Website using the link at GES

• Reading the Parent Involvement Plan and School-Parent Compact in this handbook

• Attending fall/spring conferences

• Providing an email so Parent Letters can be viewed

• Completing all Parent Surveys

• Read the Parent Letters from The Reading Den/The Reading Nest

• Contacting Mrs. Kozman or Mrs. Hartshorn with any questions or feedback

rkozman@ lhartshorn@ 740-587-8102
