REQUEST AND RECOMMENDATION

BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY

Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant

Request:

Baldwin Wallace University requests authorization to offer a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant.

Background:

Baldwin Wallace University, located in Berea, Ohio, is an independent institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Originally established in 1845, the university currently offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees to over 3,600 undergraduate and 700 graduate students. The institution is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and possesses specialized accreditation for several of its professional programs. The university has been authorized by the Chancellor since October 1969.

Curriculum and Enrollment:

The program was designed to align with the standards of the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The ARC-PA reviewed the program in October 2012; provisional accreditation was granted in March 2013. The program may be completed in twenty-four months and is composed of sixty-seven didactic credit hours and thirty-four clinical credit hours. Graduates of the program will be prepared to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam.

The university anticipates an enrollment of twenty students in year one, thirty students in year two, and thirty-five students in year three.

Faculty and Resources:

The program director, medical director, and principal faculty have been hired and are on campus to begin the program. The university plans to hire additional faculty as program enrollment grows. Existing facilities are being renovated to accommodate the program and will be operational in time to start the program.

Recommendation:

Baldwin Wallace University meets the Chancellor’s standards for graduate programs and the staff recommends provisional authorization for the Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant. Provisional authorization will continue through December 31, 2016 and is contingent upon the submission of annual progress reports by December 31, 2013, 2014, and 2015, which address any concerns that remain. Provisional authorization will be withdrawn if, in the Chancellor’s judgment, such reports do not demonstrate satisfactory progress toward compliance with the Chancellor’s standards.
