HONORING SE?OR SACK Texas Tech will honor the memory of the Red Raider great Gabe Rivera throughout the 2018 season. Rivera, one of five members of the prestigious Texas Tech Ring of Honor, passed away in his hometown of San Antonio on July 16.

Known by fans as "Se?or Sack" throughout his career, Rivera compiled 321 career tackles, including 34 that went for a loss, over his four-year career from 1979-82. He was inducted into the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Texas Tech Ring of Honor in 2014.

SATURDAY STORYLINES

RED RAIDERS HEAD TO NOVEMBER n Texas Tech enters the month of November looking for a strong start as the Red Raiders will be searching for their first win over a top-10 team since routing No. 4 West Virginia, 49-14, in 2012. n A victory over the Sooners would push Texas Tech to its 39th bowl appearance in school history as the Red Raiders are currently 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big 12 play. Tech ranks 20th nationally and third among Big 12 programs, trailing only Texas and Oklahoma in all-time bowl appearances. The Red Raiders are aiming to clinch their 16th bowl appearance since the start of the 2000 season alone and their fourth under Kliff Kingsbury.

BLACKOUT UNDER THE LIGHTS n Oklahoma will enter a sea of black Saturday night as Texas Tech is calling for a blackout of Jones AT&T Stadium. The annual tradition signals an upcoming big game and usually results in several of the largest crowds in program history. It is also part of Texas Tech's Celebrate Energy promotion to recognize the oil, gas and wind energy industries that are vital to West Texas. n Dating back to the start of the 2002 season, Texas Tech is 39-12 in night games at Jones AT&T Stadium, a 76.5 winning percentage. Under Kilff Kingsbury, Tech is 8-4 in home night games with wins in four of its last six games under the lights.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

23

Number of receiving yards Antoine Wesley needs this weekend to reach 1,000 for the season. Wesley leads all power-five receivers with 977 yards through the air. He needs only 188 yards to tie Michael Crabtree for 10th

on the Tech single-season chart.

#806D STELLAR TO START BIG 12 PLAY n The Texas Tech defense has been among the Big 12's best through the first half of league play as the Red Raiders have allowed 129 points, the second-fewest among conference teams during that span. The Red Raiders have surrendered 20 or fewer points in three of their five conference games thus far, all victories. n The Red Raiders currently rank 19th nationally and second in the Big 12 in red zone defense as opponents are scoring in 74.1 percent of their appearances inside the 20 this season. Texas Tech has created three red zone turnovers the past three weeks in addition to a blocked punt for a touchdown and fumble recovery in the end zone versus Iowa State.

3

Number of punts returned against Dominic Panazzolo this season out of his 40 attempts. Texas Tech ranks 13th nationally and second in the Big 12 as opponents are averaging only 3.3 yards per return under new special teams coordinator Adam Scheier.

2

Consecutive weeks that Dakota Allen has recovered a fumble for the #806D.

Allen fell on a loose ball in the end zone last weekend versus Iowa State

following a Riko Jeffers sack. His touchdown was part of a career-high

16 tackles against the Cyclones.

OKLAHOMA CONNECTIONS n This weekend's showdown will feature a pair of Texas Tech graduates on opposing sidelines. Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury earned his degree in management from Texas Tech in 2001 while Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley graduated from the university in 2006. Riley is only the third Texas Tech graduate to face his alma mater as an opposing head coach, joining Tom Wilson (Texas A&M 1978-81) and Art Briles (Baylor 2008-15). n Oklahoma assistant head coach/interim defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill was a fan favorite during his 10 seasons as an assistant at Texas Tech from 2000-09. McNeill coached linebackers (2000-02) and special teams (2003-06) early in his Tech career before being promoted to interim defensive coordinator during the 2007 season. McNeill remained Tech's defensive coordinator for two more years before serving as interim head coach at the 2009 Alamo Bowl where the Red Raiders defeated Michigan State, 41-31. n In addition to McNeill, three other members of Oklahoma's staff - Bill Bedenbaugh (offensive line), Dennis Simmons (outside receivers) and Bennie Wylie (Director of Sports Performance) - previously worked on Texas Tech's staff. Bedenbaugh was a graduate assistant at Tech from 2000-02 before earning a full-time position as the running backs coach from 2003-04 and then the offensive line coach from 2005-06. Simmons was an Assistant Athletic Director in charge of quality control from 2000-04 and then as the football program's Chief of Staff from 2005-07. He moved to a coaching role as the Red Raiders' wide receivers coach from 2008-09. Wylie, meanwhile, was Tech's head football strength and conditioning coach from 2003-09. n On the Texas Tech staff, both defensive coordinator David Gibbs and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Zac Spavital began their coaching careers at the University of Oklahoma. Gibbs was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma from 1991-92 under then head coach Gary Gibbs. Spavital, meanwhile, held the same position at Oklahoma from 2005-07, which led to a full-time position at Houston. n Texas Tech offensive line coach Brandon Jones and co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach Clay McGuire both coached alongside Lincoln Riley while the two were members of Ruffin McNeill's staff at East Carolina. Jones helped Riley implement a wide-open spread offense as East Carolina's offensive line coach from 2010-14, while McGuire spent two seasons on staff (2010-11) as the Pirates' running backs and special teams coach. n Texas Tech safeties coach Brett Dewhurst is quite familiar with McNeill as well as his first two seasons as a Red Raider defensive back coincided with McNeill's two-year tenure as the full-time defensive coordinator (2008-09).

OU-UT START NOVEMBER STRETCH n Texas Tech will close out its home slate with back-to-back games at Jones AT&T Stadium the next two weeks as No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 15 Texas will make trips to the Hub City. n The Red Raiders, who are currently tied for fourth in the Big 12 standings, have not previously closed its home schedule with consecutive games against ranked opponents since 1998 when Texas Tech hosted No. 18 Missouri on Oct. 31 and then No. 18 Texas two weeks later. Tech split that two-game stretch, falling to Missouri, 28-26, before shocking the Longhorns, 42-35, to secure an Independence Bowl bid. n Texas Tech has faced Oklahoma and Texas in back-to-back games six times in its history - 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2014. The Red Raiders have won at least one of those two games in four of those years (1998, 1999, 2002, 2007).

BLACKOUT GAMES IN LUBBOCK

n Blackout games in Lubbock are among the most anticipated

dates on the calendar each year for Red Raider fans, especially

at night. Over the past decade, the Red Raiders have knocked

BRIEFLY... n Texas Tech's 3-2 start to Big 12 play places the Red Raiders into a tie for fourth in the league standings. It marks Tech's best start to league play since Tech opened Kliff Kingsbury's debut season in 2013 with a 4-1 mark. n Texas Tech has held three Big 12 opponents - Oklahoma State (17), TCU (14) and Kansas (16) - to under 20 points through five games. Tech had not previously limited three or more conference foes to 20 or less points in a season since doing so four times during the 2009 campaign. n Overshadowed by the fact that Texas Tech is among the national leaders with 23 rushing touchdowns is the fact the Red Raiders have only allowed opponents to reach the end zone via the ground nine times this year. That is the fourth-lowest total for the Red Raiders through eight games dating back to 2000 and the fewest since 2012. n The Red Raiders kept both TCU and Kansas out of the end zone via the ground game over a two-game stretch, marking the first time since the 2001-02 seasons where Texas Tech has not allowed a running touchdown in back-to-back Big 12 games. Tech did not surrender a rushing touchdown in the 2001 league finale versus Oklahoma and then shut out No. 23 Texas A&M to start conference play the following year. n Texas Tech has limited opponents to less than 200 rushing yards in seven of eight games this season. The Red Raiders are 24-6 under Kliff Kingsbury in such games and 5-2 this season. n Opponents are averaging 140.4 rushing yards per game this year, Texas Tech's lowest season average since 2009 when the Red Raiders held foes to 135.1 yards per game. n The Red Raiders are averaging 42.2 points per game, which ranks 10th nationally and second in the Big 12. Texas Tech is currently on pace to average at least 40 points per game for the third time in a four-year stretch and the sixth time in school history. n Texas Tech has scored in 88.6 percent of its red zone appearances this season (39-of-44), which is a drastic improvement on a year ago where drives resulted in points on only 69.4 percent of red zone entries. Tech currently ranks 32nd nationally and fifth in the Big 12 for red zone offense after finishing 125th in the country and last in the league in 2017. n Texas Tech has been successful on third and fourth downs this season on both sides of the ball as the Red Raiders currently rank 13th nationally in third down conversions (.476), 18th in fourth down conversion defense (.357), 22nd in third down conversion defense (.325) and 24th fourth down conversions (.636). n Texas Tech continues to rank among the nation's offensive leaders as the Red Raiders are third in passing offense (376.8 yards per game), seventh in total offense (528.3 yards per game) and 10th in scoring (42.3 points per game).

WESLEY AMONG NATION'S BEST

Antoine Wesley ranks among the top breakout performances from the

first half of the season as the junior currently ranks third nationally with

977 receiving yards this season. Wesley, who ranks second nationally in

receiving yards per game (122.1), entered this season with 12 catches

for 146 yards over his first two seasons. He was added to the Biletnikoff

Award watch list a few weeks ago, which is presented annually to the

nation's top receiver regardless of position.

MORE ON ANTOINE WESLEY

n Antoine Wesley has been among the top wide receivers in

college football this season as the junior leads the Big 12 in

receptions (58) and receiving yards (977). He is also fourth in

the league with seven touchdown catches.

n In addition to ranking second nationally in receiving yards

per game and third for overall receiving yards, Wesley also

ranks ninth among FBS receivers in receptions per game (7.3)

and 16th in receiving touchdowns.

n Wesley's 977 receiving yards through eight games ranks

second among Texas Tech wideouts since 2000, trailing only

the total of two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crab-

tree from 2007 (chart below).

n Wesley's needs only 188 receiving yards over the final four

regular-season games to match Crabtree's 2008 total for 10th

all-time on the Texas Tech single-season chart. Crabtree also

set the school single-season mark with 1,962 receiving yards

in 2007 en route to winning his first of two Biletnikoff Awards.

n Wesley put together one of the best performances ever by

a Red Raider against Houston as he snapped the Texas Tech

single-game record with 261 receiving yards. He broke the pre-

vious mark of 255 yards that was set by Joel Filani against

Kansas State in 2005. In addition, Wesley moved into 10th

place on the Big 12 single-game receiving chart.

n Wesley set career highs for receptions (13), receiving yards

(261) and touchdowns (3) in the victory over the Cougars. It

was the first 100-yard performance of his career. He now has

four 100-yard games this season with 110 yards versus West

Virginia, 155 against Kansas and 119 at Iowa State.

n Wesley's performance against Kansas marked his second

outing with 150 or more yards this season. He joins Oklahoma

State's Tylan Wallace as the only Big 12 receivers with multi-

ple 150 games this year. Wesley is one of six power-five receiv-

ers to do so as well.

NEW FACES BOOST #WRU

n Texas Tech remains the top destination for wide receivers

across the country as the Red Raiders once again boast one

of the most talented receiving cores in the country led by An-

toine Wesley, T.J. Vasher and Ja'Deion High. The trio accounts

for 66.8 percent of Tech's total passing yards for a Red Raider

offense that ranks third nationally in the category.

n High is taking advantage of his sixth year of eligibility as

he ranks second on the team with 46 catches for 608 yards

through only eight games. High, who ranks 11th in the Big 12

and 52nd nationally in receiving yards per game (76.0), came

into this season with 21 career catches for 223 yards and a

touchdown over 29 games from 2014-17.

n Vasher has once again proven to be a strong big-play

threat, averaging 15.3 yards per reception so far this season

despite battling an injury weeks ago. He ended his 2017 red-

shirt freshman season ranked 22nd nationally after averaging

an impressive 18.8 yards per catch.

n Texas Tech's success comes a year after sending four

wide receivers - Cameron Batson (Tennessee Titans), Dylan

Cantrell (Los Angeles Chargers), Keke Coutee (Houston Tex-

ans) and Derrick Willies (Cleveland Browns) - to the NFL.

n Texas Tech has had no shortage of success at the wide

receiver position over the past decade as seven Red Raiders

made 53-man rosters to start the NFL season, which was tied

for Clemson for the most among schools nationally.

FRYE A MIDSEASON ALL-AMERICAN

n Adrian Frye has easily been among the top freshmen in the

country this season as the Houston native ranks among the

NCAA leaders for interceptions (4) and passes defended (15).

n Frye currently ranks tied for fourth in the FBS with his four

interceptions, which is also tied for the most among fresh-

men nationally with Syracuse's Andre Cisco and Texas' Caden

Sterns.

n Frye also leads all freshmen nationally and ranks fourth in

the FBS with 15 passes defended this season. He is nine shy of

matching Joselio Hanson's single-season school record that

was set in 2002.

n For his efforts, Frye was named to the Associated Press

midseason All-America second team as he was the only defen-

sive freshman to be recognized on one of the two teams.

ALLEN BACK AS LEADER OF #806D Dakota Allen is among the top stories in college football season this season as his journey back to Texas Tech has been highlighted across the country. Allen is in his second season as a team captain and joins fellow senior Jah'Shawn Johnson as leaders of a defense that has allowed only 129 points in Big 12 play, which ranks second in the conference.

After returning to lead the Red Raiders with 102 tackles a year ago, Allen, a preseason candidate for the Nagurski Award (top defensive player) and the Bednarik Award (top defensive player), once again has powered the #806D to the tune of a team-leading 68 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss. Allen has graded among the top linebackers in the country this season, according to the website Pro Football Focus. The publication has projected Allen as a potential first-round NFL Draft pick as he graded at 90.0 in 2017.

#806D: STARTS WITH TURNOVERS

n Since his arrival at Texas Tech in 2015, David Gibbs has

stressed the importance of creating turnovers. The Red Raid-

ers have done just that with 80 takeaways during that span,

including 42 over the past 21 games alone.

n Texas Tech's 42 turnovers since the start of the 2017 sea-

son ranks tied for ninth nationally during that span and tied for

fourth among power-five programs.

n Texas Tech, coming off six takeaways the past three weeks,

is 16-4 during Kliff Kingsbury's five-plus seasons when lead-

ing the turnover margin.

n The Red Raiders have forced 13 takeaways so far this sea-

son, which ranks 48th nationally and second in the Big 12. Tex-

as Tech created 29 turnovers a year ago.

n The Red Raiders have been successful in keeping Big 12

foes off the scoreboard this season as opponents have record-

ed only 129 points through five games, which ranks second

among league teams.

n Opponents are only averaging 28.1 points per game, which,

at this time, would be the lowest average for the Red Raider

defense since 2009 (22.6).

n Texas Tech has been particularly effective on third and

fourth downs this year as the Red Raiders rank among the

nation's top-25 leaders for defensive conversion percentages.

Opponents are converting only 32.5 of their third-down conver-

sions (22nd nationally and first in Big 12) and 35.7 of fourth-

down attempts (18th nationally and second in Big 12).

n Some of Texas Tech's success has stemmed from its play

up front as the Red Raiders are allowing only 140.4 rushing

yards per game, which ranks 42nd nationally and fifth in the

Big 12. That average is on pace to be Tech's lowest since 2009.

n Texas Tech is only surrendering 127.6 rushing yards per

game in Big 12 play, which trails Iowa State (99.2) and Oklaho-

ma (118.0) for the league low.

n Texas Tech has also been effective in creating red zone

turnovers with three in the last three games alone. The Red

Raiders rank 19th nationally and second in the Big 12 as oppo-

nents are scoring in only 74.1 percent of red zone chances.

n The Red Raiders posted their first shutout victory since

2006 against Lamar, while creating a season-high four take-

aways in the 77-0 rout.

n Texas Tech boasts one of the most experienced units in the

country as Texas Tech returned 10 defensive starters and nine

additional two-deep players from a year ago.

n Texas Tech has 12 defensive players with 10 or more starts

during their career as Jah'Shawn Johnson leads the group

with 42 followed by Jordyn Brooks (30), Kolin Hill (27), Da-

kota Allen (26), John Bonney (21), Broderick Washington, Jr.

(22), DaMarcus Fields (19), Vaughnte Dorsey (15), Eli Howard

(14), Douglas Coleman III (12), Desmon Smith (11) and Justus

Parker (10).

BROOKS, JEFFERS BOOST LB CORE n Texas Tech boasts what defensive coordinator David Gibbs considers the deepest linebacker core of his tenure as junior Jordyn Brooks and sophomore Riko Jeffers join Dakota Allen to form one the top units in the country. n Brooks eclipsed the 200 career tackle mark against West Virginia as he now has 218 over his two-plus seasons, 86 of which came in 2016 when he became the first freshman to lead the team in tackles during the Big 12 era. Brooks currently ranks second on the team with 43 tackles and fourth with 5.0 tackles for a loss. n Jeffers, meanwhile, currently is third on the team with 36 tackles (18 solo), giving him 58 now for his career. Jeffers, who is coming off a career-high 11 tackles at Iowa State, currently ranks third on the team with 5.5 tackles for a loss. n Allen ranks second among active Red Raiders with 257 career tackles, trailing only Jah'Shawn Johnson in the category. He has four interceptions, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries during his two-plus seasons as well.

JOHNSON AMONG TECH GREATS

n Each tackle for Jah'Shawn Johnson during the 2018 sea-

son will inch him closer to the Texas Tech record book as he

needs 41 takedowns to crack the top 10 in program history.

Johnson is averaging 86 tackles per season over the past

three years after notching 85 as a redshirt freshman in 2015,

77 in 2016 and then a career-high 97 a year ago. He missed the

first three games of this season due to injury.

n Johnson has also played a huge role in Texas Tech's rise as

one of the top turnover-causing defenses in the country as he

has been part of 17 takeaways over his career (5 interceptions,

6 forced fumbles, 6 fumble recoveries), easily the most among

active Red Raiders.

n Since the start of 2000, Johnson's six career forced fum-

bles rank fourth among Red Raiders, trailing only the totals of

Dwayne Slay (8 from 2004-05), Pete Robertson (8 from 2011-

15) and Brandon Williams (7 from 2006-08).

n Johnson's five fumble recoveries, meanwhile, are tied with

Keyunta Dawson (2003-06) for the most among Red Raid-

ers dating back to the 2000 season. With six regular-season

games left to play, Johnson needs two more fumble recoveries

to tie Zach Thomas' (1992-95) school record.

HIGH LEVEL OF PRODUCTION

Since joining the coaching profession in 2008, Kliff Kingsbury has built a

reputation as one of the top quarterback developers. In that short time,

he has had six quarterbacks move on to NFL careers, including 2017 NFL

first-round selection Patrick Mahomes II.

BOWMAN AMONG TOP FRESHMEN

n Through the first seven games (six starts) of his collegiate

career, Alan Bowman sure hasn't looked like a true freshman.

He has thrown for 2,411 yards and 15 touchdowns as he ranks

third in the country in passing yards per game (344.4) and sev-

enth overall in passing yards. He leads all freshmen in both

categories despite missing the TCU game and most of the

West Virginia loss.

n Bowman turned in one of the most impressive performanc-

es by a freshman in NCAA history versus Houston as he com-

pleted 43-of-59 passes for 605 yards and five touchdowns.

Bowman's 605 yards through the air marked the most by a

freshman in Big 12 history, snapping the previous record of

598 yards set by Patrick Mahomes II against Baylor in 2014.

n Bowman finished six passing yards shy of the NCAA fresh-

man passing record that was set in 1998 by Nevada's David

Neill against New Mexico State. It marked only the third time

in FBS history where a freshman has thrown for at least 600

yards in a game (second time by a true freshman).

n Bowman's performance marked the 18th time in FBS histo-

ry where a quarterback has thrown for 600 yards and the fifth

time a Red Raider had done so, joining the likes of Mahomes,

B.J. Symons, Graham Harrell and Cody Hodges.

n Bowman's 605 passing yards and 602 yards of total of-

fense are the most by a FBS quarterback so far this season.

n Bowman followed the Houston win with a similar strong

showing in his first career start on the road at Oklahoma State.

He completed 76 percent of his passes (35-of-46) for 397

yards and two touchdowns en route to leading the Red Raiders

to their largest margin of victory in a road win over a top-15

team in school history.

n Bowman returned as Texas Tech's starter against Kansas,

completing 36-of-46 passes for 408 yards and three touch-

downs in the rout. He is the only freshman in the FBS this sea-

son with multiple games of 400 or more passing yards.

n Bowman became the sixth true freshman in school history

to start a game at quarterback, joining a list that includes Ron

Reeves (1978), Aaron Keesee (1984), Baker Mayfield (2013),

Davis Webb (2013) and Patrick Mahomes II (2014).

n Additionally, Bowman is the seventh freshman quarter-

back to start during Kliff Kingsbury's coaching career, join-

ing Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and current NFL

quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes II, Baker Mayfield and Davis

Webb. Kingsbury also started a pair of freshmen in Terrance

Broadway and David Piland during his first season as a full-

time assistant coach at the University of Houston in 2010.

BOWMAN AMONG FRESHMAN QBS

n In addition to leading all freshmen nationally in passing,

Alan Bowman is closing in becoming the top true freshman

passer in school history. He needs 307 passing yards and five

touchdowns to match Davis Webb's true freshman records

that were set in 2013.

DEPTH EVIDENT IN QB ROOM n Texas Tech's success offensively this year has come in an unusual way as Kliff Kingsbury has utilized three different starting quarterbacks through seven games in Alan Bowman, McLane Carter and Jett Duffey. n Duffey earned the start at TCU, marking the first time since 2009 where Texas Tech has used three different starting quarterbacks in a season. The Red Raiders used Taylor Potts, Steven Sheffield and Seth Doege that season. n Dating back to the start of its passing era in 2000, Texas Tech has not previously used three different starting quarterbacks through six games.

BY GROUND OR BY AIR WITH DUFFEY n Jett Duffey has proven early in his career that he can hurt defenses with both his arm and his legs as he has completed 39-of-63 passes (61.9 percent) for 488 yards and two touchdowns in four games, while also rushing for 250 yards and three touchdowns on 39 attempts. n Duffey has led Tech in rushing in three of the five games he has appeared in as he totaled 81 yards on six carries against Lamar before setting a career high with 86 yards on the ground (15 carries) versus West Virginia. He followed with 83 yards and a touchdown at TCU, including the go-ahead 38 yard touchdown scamper midway through the fourth quarter.

FINISH n The term "finish" has been a popular one around the Football Training Facility since the conclusion of the 2017 campaign as head coach Kliff Kingsbury declared the six-letter word as the official team motto for this season. The Red Raiders have dropped eight games by one possession or less (8 points) the last two-plus seasons, roughly half of their total

losses during that span.

SIXTH YEAR VETERANS n Texas Tech has three sixth-year seniors on its roster that are expected to play significant roles this season in Zach Austin, Kyle Heffron and Ja'Deion High. Austin and High will both contribute to Texas Tech's passing game, while Heffron will enter his third season as the Red Raiders' deep snapper.
